Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6In this sequel to Aliens Ate My Homework (Pocket, 1993), Rod Allbright and his bratty cousin Elspeth are kidnapped by Smorkus Flinders, a huge and hideous monster from Dimension X. Smorkus is holding them hostage to trap Rod's alien friends from the good ship Ferkel. The ship's captain and crew manage to rescue Rod and Elspeth, but getting out of Dimension X and stopping the evil Smorkus proves to be more difficult. After spending time with some shapeshifters and apprenticing to the warrior Tar Gibbons, Rod acquires new self-confidence, and, discovering that Smorkus knows something about his missing father, the enraged boy defeats the giant and saves the universe. Readers will enjoy the trademark combination of humor, nonstop action, and wild characters that distinguish Coville's books. With its bright cover, alluring title, and occasional black-and-white illustrations, this book is guaranteed to be popular with space-opera fans, comic-book readers, and budding science-fiction enthusiasts.Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

Review For I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X

I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X. Sounds like a pretty cheesy kids¿ novel, but appearances can be deceiving. For all Rod Allbright Alien Adventure books fans, you know all the characters and places. For those who don¿t, here¿s a quick summary. Rod Allbright is a ¿regular person¿ that, in the last book (Aliens ate my Homework), met some members of the Galactic Patrol (a galaxy-wide police organization) and helped them catch a villain named BKR, who was a master criminal and had literally made ¿millions weep¿ throughout the galaxy. However, Rod had to promise not to tell anyone else about the aliens (and their ship, the Ferkel), except his twin brother and sister, who already knew, but were so young no one would believe them. I believe that I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X is a quality science fiction book and one of Bruce Coville¿s best books ever. What made this book somewhat more interesting than the first (and in general), was the addition of new villains and interdimensional gateways. First, the introduction of Smoker¿s Flinders (BKR¿s partner) at the beginning of the book was genius. Smoker¿s Flinders is over 70 feet tall and is so big that his feet leave huge indentations in the ground wherever he goes. Also, interdimensional gateways are added to the story, which enable you to travel to different dimensions. I won¿t give you the specifics, but something really cool happens in the first part of the book. This book is extremely well structured and leaves on a huge cliffhanger at the end. Second, introducing the shapeshifters was a great move on Coville¿s part. The shapeshifters first appear in I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X. They are a very odd race that has the ability to alter their form, or shapeshift. At first, the shapeshifters are suspicious of Rod and the crew, but their concerns are allayed when the shapeshifters confirm that Rod and the crew are not enemies or spies. After that, the shapeshifters use their powers (the ability to shapeshift) to help out the crew of the Ferkel and Rod occasionally, but only once in this book. As this is only the second book out of a four-part series, this book does not finish the tale of Rod¿s exploits with the crew of the Ferkel. However, Coville¿s I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X is a definitely notable science fiction book, and worthy of recognition in the science fiction book community.
