Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Part of the Petit Collage series, this touch-and-feel counting book includes tactile elements set against organic-looking backdrops. “One dragonfly” has a shiny red body; “three beetles” have crinkly, iridescent backs; and a final spread features a big, fuzzy purple flower. A basic but eye-catching intro to counting and insects. Ages 1-3. (Mar.)

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Along with bug identification, young children will begin to count. A numeral from one through five is shown in a circle in the upper left corner of the double-page spread. It is also spelled out along with the name of the bug (such as: two butterflies). The number concept is reinforced not only by the number of bugs but also the other objects pictured. For example, along with the butterflies we see two houses, two clouds and two flowers. There is a dragonfly with a smooth and sparkly body, butterflies with textured spots on their wings, beetles with textured bodies that crinkle when touched, furry-feeling bees, and a flower with a felt center that attracts all the bugs on the last page. The simple design and clean layout make this a good choice for babies and toddlers. Children will not only learn the names of the bugs but they will also gain number and color recognition. The graphic-style collage illustrations are comprised of interesting patterns and various hues. They will also like the tactile experience of the textures. This is a clear, basic, and bright touch-and-feel board book. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
