Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
I Like Collies! is part of the "Discover Dogs with The American Canine Association" series of books by Enslow Publishers geared to the five to eight year-old-child interested in learning more about dogs. The twenty-four page book includes chapters with topics such as "Is a Collie Right For You," "A Dog or a Puppy," "Loving Your Collie," "A Good Friend," and a note to parents. The American Canine Association states on its website that it is "America's Largest Veterinary Health Tracking Canine Registry" and offers breeders and dog owners the opportunity to register with their service—ostensibly to provide healthy dogs to the public. As they claim to be a Canine Registry and have a link for Professional Breeders, it is surprising that no mention is made of acquiring a dog from a breeder in this book. In fact, only shelters and rescue groups are mentioned. Though Collies come in a variety of colors no mention of this fact is made in the book. Several of the books in this series have a "famous dog of the breed" listed at the back. I Like Collies has Lassie listed, however, children in this age group may not be able to make that cultural reference. The five word "Words to Know" glossary contains no words directly related to this breed, only general dog terms including groomer and veterinarian. The bibliography, "Read About Dogs" and "Internet Addresses" sections offer opportunities for further study and research, however, there are no links to the more detailed and informative sites including the Collie Parent Club and the American Kennel Club www.akc.org.
