Two titles from Barbara Joan Hicks and illustrator Lila Prap also deal with color concepts. I Like Colors presents children with bright drawings of multi-colored creatures such as a spread of a "wacky" toucan and "quacky" duck and another of a "high" butterfly and "low" caterpillar. Textured pastel drawings in earth tones make the most of a black background. I Like Black and White, on the other hand, uses colorful backdrops to highlight the title shades, displaying a "stinky" skunk paired with a "slinky" snake, and a pair of white cats under "twinkly skies." Children's Literature
Rich, vibrant colors against a black background attract the eyes to the striking illustrated pages of this concept book. The front endpapers with the stripes and the back endpapers with the dots activate the brilliance of color with the black outlines. On the pages in between, the absence of color in the background allows the exotic creatures to dramatically take the limelight with their bright hues outlined in black. The uncomplicated shapes and lines accentuate the pictures of the animals and insects. The word pair of antonyms reflects the characteristics of the creatures such as "quiet" for the snake and "loud' for the parrot. Some of the paired words on the layout are adjectives that describe the animals. The words are few yet have a nice rhythm and rhyme. The book winds down with the gradual appearance of flowers and two children, a boy and a girl, who bring the book to a happy ending with the sharing of colorful flowers. 2006 (orig. 2005), Tiger Tales/Random House Children's Books, Ages 2 to 6.
