Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Young children are introduced to pictures of fourteen different fruits sorted by color. One double-page spread is given to each of red, green and yellow fruit, while a single page is given to blue and purple. In the double-page spreads the left-hand side is divided into four boxes. One box is painted the color and has the word printed on top. The other three boxes each show a fruit with the name of the fruit underneath. The single page of blue and purple devotes two boxes to the colors and two to fruit. The last page shows slices of all the fruit falling into a bowl. The right-hand page for red, green, and yellow fruit has a full-page version of one of the fruits from the left side. Various patterns form the collage fruit, with one part a different texture. Common familiar fruits, such as strawberry, apple, and orange, are shown with more exotic varieties, such as kiwi and cantaloupe. The simple design and clean layout make this a good choice for babies and toddlers. Children will not only learn the names of the fruits but they will also gain color recognition. On each page are various shades of each color which provide interest to the pictures and add to a child's understanding of the color. They will also like the tactile experience of the textures. This is a clear, basic, and bright touch-and-feel board book. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
Kirkus Reviews
Siminovich's stylish collages join the plethora of concept books that marry food with color. Red (strawberry, raspberry, cherries), green (apple, kiwi, grapes), yellow (pear, banana, lemon) and orange (orange, cantaloupe, peach) each get a doublepage spread, with blue (blueberries) and purple (plum) getting short shrift at the end. With the exception of the last two, each color comprises the upperleft quadrant of recto, with the other three quadrants occupied by the three fruits in question; verso finds one fruit reproduced fullpage with a touchandfeel element incorporated into the collage; the smooth, rubbery apple skin is particularly effective. It's been done before, but the sophistication of the presentation makes this one worth paying attention to. I Like Bugs (9780763648022) counts insects from one to five with similar touchandfeel collage work. (Board book. 6 mos.3)
