I Like It Like That: The Definitive Chris Kenner Collection 1956-1968

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Hard to believe, but Shout!'s 2012 compilation I Like It Like That: The Definitive Chris Kenner Collection 1956-1968 truly is the first definitive Kenner collection to appear on CD, trumping the excellent 2003 Fuel 2000 set The Chris Kenner Collection: Land Of 1000 Dances. At 31 tracks, this is seven tracks longer than the 2003 collection, and it has all of his 1966 LP Land of 1000 Dances (which itself collected singles released between 1961-1963), then it backtracks to add sides he cut in the '50s for Baton, Imperial, and Ron, then rounds up further sides for Instant recorded between 1964 and 1968, adding the unreleased "My Wife" to the equation. Kenner's prime period was the first half of the '60s -- once R&B gave way to funkier soul, the hits didn't come as quickly and he wound up with oddities like "Fumigate Funky Broadway" and the "Hold On I'm Comin'" rip-off "Mini Skirts and Soul" -- and most of the material here is from that period, including songs he co-wrote with Fats Domino ("Land of 1000 Dances") and Allen Toussaint ("I Like It Like That"). Kenner is always an enthusiastic, engaging vocalist, keeping the good times rolling when the recording is little more than a groove, but often there are tremendous songs here too, particularly on the singles that comprise that 1966 LP and the singles that followed in 1964, 1965, and 1966, all the way up to "Shoo Rah." On the basis of these songs, which show there was more to Kenner than his two classic hits, it's clear that he is one of the great New Orleans R&B vocalists of the '60s, and he finally has the collection he deserves.
