Publishers Weekly
First published as a picture book in 1997, PW called I Like It When... by Mary Murphy "exceptionally warm." Now, the story of a penguin child and her loving caregiver return in a board book format that sets off the economical text and bold palette.
Children's Literature - Karen Saxe
In this book the simple pleasures (of childhood) are articulated. For example, the first page shows an adult penguin and a child penguin walking along holding hands and smiling, and the text reads ''I like it when you hold my hand''. The pictures, set on primary color pages, are really cute. It is a sweet little book, good for bedtime reading, and may teach the toddler that some of the everyday things (like kissing goodnight, tickling, hugging) are in fact precious and should be cherished.
Kirkus Reviews
A little penguin tells a big penguin about the shared experiences it likes most: "I like it when you hold my hand," and "I like it when you let me help." These are simple pleasures, from eating new things to playing peekaboo, reading, dancing, sharing stories, splashing in the tub, and being hugged and kissed good night. With large bold shapes against flat backgrounds in poster-paint colors, Murphy's first book makes clear the happy closeness of the pair. Although the most obvious assumption is that the penguins represent mother and child, their relationship is not spelled out or narrowly defined in any way. Any child with a loving, committed caregiver will recognize that person in these pages.

    I Also Recommend:

    I like it!

We first saw this book in our local library. We checked it out and continued to check it out because we enjoyed reading it to our 1 1/2 year old at bedtime. We finally decided it was time to buy the book. At the time I thought I was purchasing a paperback style. Come to find out it was a board book - EVEN BETTER! This book really pin points the special things with your child. It has turned out to be a great bed time book!

A Must Have Book for every baby/toddler

I Like It When.... is a beautiful book. My three kids loved this book so much that I have to buy a second one for my other twin. The drawings are great, the primary colours are easy to look at it and the simple, very loving story is awesome. It is a book that will touch your heart. It is my favourite book to give as a gift.

Such a nice book about the simple things in life. My child loved it when he was 3 and he loves it even more now that he's 5.

    Its One of Daddy's Favorites

A good children's book is one that both the parent and the child enjoy. And this one fits the bill -- a lot of very early childhood learning packed into a sweet and well illustrated book. The bold lettering and use of simple primary colors held my daughter's attention at the age of 18 months when I first introduced this book to her. This book also taught my daughter to recognize a few simple words, it taught her about relationships, recounting activities, and how to express emotions and affection. The penguin reminds me of a Daddy penguin. Lets be honest... MY favorite part is the tickle part. My daughter anticipates me tickling her belly and just goes crazy. The best part is that she's now almost three, and this book is still very relevant to her daily activities.

    James Favorite

I read this to my Grandson, it is his favorite book. I read it at least 4 times a day when I'm with him. He loves it so much he's worn it out, and the pages came apart. I have been reading it to him since he was born. And he is now 14 months old. He goes and gets it and sits on my lap. His favorite part is when I say I lke it when you tickle me. and he tickles his tummy it is so cute. So I now have to get a new one, not to replace that one but one to keep. I am going to try some of the other penquin books by Mary Murphy I highly recomend this cute book.

    My daughter's favorite

My daughter is only 1 year old, but she already knows which book she loves the most. I have to read it at least 3 times before she'll go to bed!
