Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
What is fun to ride? A bike? A car? How about a horse or pony? These words make up more than half of the eight words introduced in this early reader with a predictable text pattern. Part of the "My World" Leveled Reader series written in eight guided reading levels A-H, the colorful and glossy covers are coded by rainbow colors to make it easier for the beginning reader to move from level to level as their skills progress. As part of Level B, this reader is designed to help young children become enthusiastic and motivated readers. Concepts such as classification, patterns, and how families, friendships, and communities work are featured. Each of the fifteen pages have full-page simple but vivid color picture-clue photos and introduce compound words with one line of large and clear print per page. This level is best for the reader who is beginning to develop a sight word vocabulary and can recognize a few words by sight. A "Words to Know" page prominently displays illustrated words. The last page, titled "Notes for Adults," lists objectives, questions to ask before and after reading as well as curriculum extensions. The publisher offers a resourceful website to educators (www.crabtree.com). Downloadable assessment guides and rubrics, goals and objectives, planning timetables, vocabulary charts, and Teacher's Guide (for some titles) are available. Additionally, curriculum correlation to standards and requirements for each U.S. state and Canadian province as well as the U.K and Australia is made available as are supplemental materials and blackline masters. The publisher's website generously offers a free downloadable eBook to visitors as well as a link to an audio visit with author Kalman. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
