Who wouldn't get a kick out of the frolicsome cast of strutting turkeys, hopping hens, et al. in this debut picture book? Each creature-or grouping, in such cases as ``the pig with all her little piglets''-receives an entire spread, captioned with a straightforward declaration from the girl on the book's cover: ``I love (goat, donkey, etc.).'' The acrylic and gouache illustrations' large scale and stark white backgrounds add to the overall exuberance. And though McDonnell's somewhat primitive, folk-art technique occasionally skews the creatures' faces, their wry expressions are full of punch (for example, the goat ``racing across the field'' has an unmistakable glint in its eye, the donkey ``braying hee-haw!'' holds its head at a proud angle). This simple and effective introduction to farm denizens also provides an important first lesson about kindness and affection for all animals. Ages 2-up. (Aug.)

Big, colorful farm animals fill each page of this board book. The text has a little girl stating that she loves whatever creature appears on the page and they range from her dog Jack to a big fat turkey strutting around the farmyard. In between we meet the ducks, a hen, goat, donkey, cow, pig, pony, sheep, and a cat and her kittens. A wonderful book to introduce farm animals and also a strong positive message about loving all creatures. This board book adaptation of the original 1994 book works well. 2001, Candlewick, $6.99. Ages 1 to 4. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

A young girl visits her farm animals and watches them behave in characteristic ways. Bold pictures, bright colors, huge print, and predictable language (each page begins with I love...) make this book a natural for sharing with a whole group-perhaps as a springboard to studying farm life. The illustrations take center stage here and while they show plenty of action and humor, their perspective and proportion at times makes the animals depicted seem grotesque and disturbing. The illustrations seem wrong for little kids, but the text is definitely aimed at the toddler set. 1996 (orig.

PreS-A charming picture book filled with a small child's joyous love for all the animals on her farm. Large, bold illustrations and a clear text fairly explode with exuberance. Descriptions of ducks ``...waddling to the water,'' hens ``...hopping up and down,'' a goat ``...racing across the field,'' a cow ``...swishing her tail,'' a pony ``...rolling over and over,'' and a turkey ``...strutting around the yard'' convey a sense of bustling activity. The double-page acrylic-and-gouache paintings combined with the simple text make this a perfect choice for sharing with toddler groups.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY
