Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
In a book to warm the hearts of cat lovers, the author and illustrator celebrate cats of all kinds in many different places doing assorted activities. "Hairy cats, scaredy cats…Dancing cats, prancing cats, Wiry cats, fiery cats…" The few descriptive words per page, printed in assorted sizes, colors, and styles of lettering, frequently rhyme as they move around and across the pages. Of course, it is the collection of felines, mostly young ones, that attracts us. They are presented in pairs in typical interactions. The images seem almost photographic, but are created with a feeling for their cat-like qualities to enhance the esthetic appeal. They are distinct personalities in cat form, stimulating appropriately varied responses. There is even a dog included for non-cat fans. The love of cats is emphasized above all.

PreS-K
This picture book has what every cat person wants—a lot of felines in all their playful, mysterious glory. Mortimer's cats are second to none. Stainton's spare text—"Singing cats,/Swinging cats./Cats that wink,/cats that think./I love cats!"—offers just enough material for the artist, who endows each illustration with more texture and character than one would expect this side of 3-D. The white backgrounds increase the charm of the book by spotlighting the cats. The repetitive, rhyming text, use of opposites, and buoyant pictures make this a good selection for early readers. And with its smooth and easy read-aloud lilt, I Love Cats is perfect for group sharing.

Kirkus Reviews
Feline fans will certainly appreciate Mortimer's typically splendid and plush renderings of cats. These adorable, playful and wide-eyed creatures can practically be petted. The text's a bit problematic, however, beginning seemingly like a book about opposites, then moving on to adjectives that are sometimes near, sometimes exact rhymes. At best, children will be introduced to many unfamiliar words, though their meanings aren't always clearly demonstrated. The art for "Whirly cats," for example, is static, showing a cat holding onto its tail but without conveying a cat's ability to twirl around while doing so. Kids may not altogether get "Wiry cats" either. The "cats on your head" page is priceless, though, portraying a very contented kitty dozing atop a bemused dog's head. The book does work as a joyous celebration of cats, and readers and listeners will find much to purr-posefully pore over. (Picture book. 3-6)
ALA Booklist
“More than two dozen cats to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over…maximum catness.”
