In this sweet, engaging picture book, Ollie and his pet dog Fred celebrates all the things they love about Christmas.
Children's Literature - Beverley FaheyOllie, a stuffed animal, and his little dog Fred love everything about Christmas. In simple, rhyming text that is hand-lettered on crisp white paper Ollie enumerates all that he loves about the holiday. Crinkly paper, an angel with one wing, baking cookies with Nanna, the stars in the sky, lights twinkling on the tree and best of all listening for the bells on Santa's sleigh are just some of his favorite things. The watercolor illustrations have a simplicity and child-like quality to them that make them the perfect compliment to the story. It's cheerful, it's festive, it's charming and it is reminiscent of the simplicity of M.B. Goffstein. This is an ideal selection for toddlers and preschoolers. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
School Library JournalPreS-Gr 1–A zebra named Ollie runs down some of his favorite holiday activities. Sweet, soft watercolors show Ollie and his dog decorating the Christmas tree, baking holiday treats with Nanna, and waiting for Santa, creating a cozy, merry accompaniment to the simple rhyming text. This is a great choice for a lap-sit and also as a read-alone for beginning readers.–Maureen Wade, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus ReviewsOllie is a gray-striped animal, perhaps a toy rabbit or zebra. He seems to live alone with his dog, Fred, but he does have a loving grandmother who bakes a Christmas cake with him. In the short, first-person narration, Ollie describes his preparations for the holiday. He and Fred set out a Nativity set, make their own decorations, trim their tree and spot Santa as he passes by in the sky. Each page has just a few words of rhyming text, set in a large font that looks like a child's printing. Simple watercolor illustrations of the characters stand out against white backgrounds, extending the childlike simplicity of the effort. This would be an excellent choice for a toddler's first book about the Christmas season and could also serve as an early reader. (Picture book. 1-6)
