Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Felines and Canines abound in the Super Sturdy Picture Books I Love Cats and I Love Dogs by Barney Saltzberg (Animal Kisses). Rhyming text boasting all the reasons to love cats and dogs makes for a great read aloud. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
There are cat people and there are dog people, and probably some who love both. In the companion books by Saltzberg, a young girl tells us why she loves cats and a young boy tells us why he loves dogs. Saltzberg introduces readers to big dogs, little dogs, and even ones that do tricks. The young lad with seven dogs on leashes does not look like he can handle that active menagerie. No matter what their shape or size, he just loves dogs. Readers see the boy and dog playing ball and the dog fetching a stick. This book is larger than most board books and it has very sturdy pages. It looks more like a picture book, and would be a good transition from the early board books to picture books or early readers. Part of the "Super Sturdy Picture Book" series. 2006, Candlewick, Ages 6 mo. to 5.
—Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
PreS-In the first title, a purple-pajama'd little girl regales listeners with her many reasons for favoring these purring, hiding, dreaming felines. "Some cats just yawn./Some cats just purr./Some cats just watch./And some clean their fur." Saltzberg's lively stripy, spotty, climbing cats, done in pencil, ink, and acrylics, are sure to win over young children. The sweet child pictured in the second title is seen among plenty of appealing pups, and, "short hair or furry," loves all of them. The many illustrations of happy, sleepy, big, and little dogs performing tricks, running, and playing are endearing. Both titles are good choices for toddlers, who will ask for repeated readings.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

My daughter's very first 'favorite' book

My daughter is an on-the-go toddler, who had no interest in sitting still for a book until she was about 13 months old. That was when she first brought 'I Love Dogs' to me and sat down in my lap for a read. The story is short, perfect for those with a miniscule attention span. The illustrations are cute, and the rhyming story is simple, without being overly boring for mom. This is a good thing... as we read it at least 5 times a day. I love this super sturdy picture book series. The pages are a heavier weight, harder to bend, without being a board book. We do have a dog at home-- and that is perhaps my little girl gravitated to this book. But, whatever the reason, I am happy this is her first/current favorite book.
