Overview

Everybody loves KORKY—especially in this brand-new, chunky board book edition of Cristiano Sorrentino’s irresistible story!
Loveable, huggable, and ever so snug-able Korky is the puppy of every kid’s dreams. He’s inspired by Cristiano’s own pet: mischievously chasing toys, chewing shoes, and making a mess. (That’s what Korky does best.) Of course, he’s also tops at kissing the nose of his young owner when the boy feels sad.
Kids will read this wonderful tale of mischief and puppy love again and again.

PreS

With just the bare minimum of a rhyming text, this book describes the antics of a playful puppy. The large, exuberant illustrations, all primary colors and simple bold lines, are the main draw. Korky is delightfully over-the-top, with a nose like Snoopy's and a body like Tintin's Snowy. Full-page paintings show him reveling in all aspects of puppyhood, from catching Frisbees to rolling on the ground to comforting his young owner. Halfway through the book the rhythm is awkwardly broken, reinforcing the notion that this is a title in which the pictures dominate. The words just get in the way. Pair it with Blackstone and Mockford's Cleo the Cat (Barefoot, 2000), which stars a feline who is as colorful and energetic as Korky.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

Kirkus Reviews
Korky is a floppy white puppy with a nose for trouble; he knocks over flower vases, chews up shoes and steps in paint pots. But he is sweet and lovable as well, especially to the little boy who narrates this simple, rhyming tale suitable for toddlers and younger preschoolers who are just starting to listen to complete stories. The dog's owner describes Korky through his favorite toys, food and behavior, declaring him "ever so snug-able" and "the best friend I've ever had." The singsong rhyme doesn't always scan well, and it's the sort of story that wouldn't hold up well to repeat readings from an adult perspective (and just the sort of story a toddler might latch onto as a favorite). The volume's large size suits Sorrentino's appealing illustrations, which employ bright colors, simple shapes and thick black outlines to make his characters stand out. Though Korky is a cute pup with engaging expressions, his tale doesn't stand out from the pack. (Picture book. 2-4)

I Love Korky is our 15 month old granddaughter's favorite book.  The story and rhymes are ones a toddler understands and can interact  with (she "barks twice" with Korky, kisses his nose and is also huggable, huggable and snuggable!).  The bright colors and simple but adorable illustrations appeal to her - we all know the story by heart because she always wants to 'read' it.  Korky is the perfect  story type and length for a toddler's attention span and stage of development.   I hope this author and illustrator continue with a series of Korky books.  We are now looking for a Korky look-alike stuffed animal for Christmas!
