Overview

"I love my daddy because he takes naps with me."

This beloved, best-selling concept book, richly illustrated by Ashley Wolff, is now available as a board book for small hands. The youngest nursery tots will appreciate how phrases and actions from their own experiences also apply to animal babies. Each book begins with an affectionate scene between a human parent and child, but moves on to caregiving in animal families. "She listens when I talk" shows a mama cat and her mewing kitten. "She tucks me in" features a kangaroo with her joey peeking out of her pouch. "He sings me songs" shows a gray wolf and his cub. In concept, text, and art, these are among the most warm and reassuring lap books ever.

I Love My Daddy Because . . . will also be available in bilingual (English/Spanish) board-book editions.

Another pair of board books is also offered in English and Spanish-English editions: I Love My Mommy Because... (Quiero a mi mama porque...) and I Love My Daddy Because... (Quiero a mi papa porque...) by Laurel Porter-Gaylord, illus. by Ashley Wolff. Children may well identify with the baby animals pictured, all of whom love their parents for all that they do for their children, whether it be a daddy emperor penguin that "keeps me safe and warm" or a mother panda that "gives me great big hugs." PreS-K-- In both words and pictures, these books introduce animal parents as they care for their young. A simple analogy is set up between a human child's narration of how he or she is nurtured, and the corresponding behavior among sheep, chickens, pigs, etc., is shown in soft, realistic, full-color illustrations. Sturdy stock pages make these books an excellent choice for sharing; labels above each picture identify the creatures depicted. Roger B. Hirschland's How Animals Care for Their Babies (National Geographic, 1987) is a more scientific presentation of this subject, but for a slightly older audience. --Barbara B. Well done, Ms. Porter-Gaylord! There are so many books that capture the relationship between mothers and daughters, but not enough between fathers and daughters. We purchased this book for father's day but ended up reading it early. I highly recommend this book which promotes, reading, discussion, laughter....it is a fabulous book. J.R. Reardon author, "Confidential Communications" and "Dishonored"

Any father would enjoy getting this admiring book from his young daughter. Both will then experience many happy hours reading the book together. I suspect most fathers will also feel inspired to become even more lovable! The book is organized to show (through a series of beautiful detailed color illustrations) that animal fathers nurture their young also. The book opens with a father and his young daughter playing with hand puppets. 'I love my Daddy because he plays with me.' Next is an Emperor penguin with a chick ('He keeps me safe and warm.'). There is a horned puffin and chick ('He brings me dinner.' -- little fish in this case). You will see a bald eagle and a chick ('He is big and strong.'). That is followed by a lion and cub ('He takes naps with me.). The next illustration combines a bear with a kit and a muskrat with a kit ('I love my Daddy because he can build a house.'). Humor arrives with a chimpanzee and baby ('He makes me laugh.'). Here are the remaining pairs and quotes: giraffe and calf ('He helps me reach things.'); gray wolf and cub ('He sings me songs.'); common loon with chick ('He takes me for a ride.' -- the chick sits on the loon's back); gorilla and baby ('He teaches me to be brave.'); red fox and young with a porcupine ('He teaches me to be careful.'); jaguar with kitten, anoles, spider monkeys, toucans, parrots, and two-toed sloths ('I love my Daddy because he plays hide and seek with us.'); musk oxen and calf ('He protects our family.'); and reindeer and calf ('He watches over me at night.'). The final scene in the book is the Daddy and his daughter holding each other. 'I love my Daddy and my Daddy loves me.' Obviously, these animal images can be just a starting point for a discussion about how and why Daddies like to care for their children. By seeing that fatherly love and caring are universal, your child should also develop a deeper confidence in your caring, support, and love. As I read down the book's list, I was also reminded of many happy occasions when I played these roles for my daughter. Naturally, I enjoyed those reminiscences. After you finish the book, I suggest that you think about other ways that Daddies care for their children and add animals who do that. Certainly, cleaning up could be one. Another one could be meeting other family members. You and your daughter can do some research on animal fathers to find other metaphors for your own relationship. This will bring both of you even more pleasure as you make these discoveries together on your own! May your daughter always love her Daddy! Happy father's day! I purchased this (and the Mommy book) for my daughter -- born in 1990. She always loved and asked for this book!! It went through two other siblings and they equally adored it!! Now I order copies for friends having their first child.... knowing it will be passed down the line for their family too!! Wonderful illustrations and simple, beautiful words!!! Both books are gems!!
