Editorial Reviews

This soothing bedtime read tells the story of a loving father bear and a very lucky cub. Sebastien Braun's furry pair spends happy times together in a gentle woodland setting; their unfeigned happiness and warmth visible in every evocative two-page spread. As festive as a splash in the pond.
Children's Literature
A bear cub explains why he loves his daddy. Each double-page spread has a luminous illustration of the cub and his father doing something together. For instance, "My daddy washes me" shows the two splashing in a sun-lit stream while a trio of frogs looks on. They eat together, play together, and just sit together. In the end, they snuggle close and the cub states, "I love my daddy." This quiet, gentle book would be a great bedtime story for fathers to share with their own little cubs. The illustrations are evocative and calming. I would not try it with older, literal-minded children who will remind you that male bears do not usually assist in rearing the cubs. 2004, Boxer Books/HarperCollins, Ages 3 to 7.

PreS-Baby Bear describes his day in the forest and all the activities he shares with his father-waking up, eating, bathing, playing, and cuddling. Each spread has a single, simple line of text. The illustrations are softly hued, impressionistic natural scenes featuring a large bear and a very small cub. The animals are charming, lovable, and expressive. The text and illustrations convey the close, loving bond between parent and child. A warm, gentle story to share with preschoolers in storytime or at bedtime.-Linda Staskus, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Parentchild bonding has never looked cozier, as a huge brown Papa bear and a very small cub spend quality time together from dawn till dusk in a leafy forest. The cub takes the narrative lead: "My daddy wakes me. My daddy feeds me," and so on, until after "My daddy cuddles me" the pair drowse to the simple declaration, "I love my daddy." Braun depicts hazyedged figures and settings in long brushstrokes of golden toned browns and yellows, on a bottom layer of cool, green, flowerstrewn grass. In a companion volume, I Love My Mommy, he uses a similar arc and some of the same lines, but includes more abstract observations"My mommy works really hard," "My mommy is always there for me"and depicts a different animal pair on each spread. Both make perfect fare for an intimate shared reading, though parents may come away feeling a little pressured by the high expectations. (Picture book. 35)

My 2 year old son and I really enjoy this book together. The illustrations are amazing and allow for counting frogs, cuddling, yawning, etc. There's a lot you can talk about within the pictures.

We picked this book up for my son to 'read' to his daddy on Father's Day. It is breathtaking in imagery and so sweetly written.
