Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Elephant and Piggie are good friends. Piggie gets a wonderful new toy and shows it to Elephant, who is not quite sure what the toy is. Actually, Piggie doesn't know what the toy is either. After deciding that it must be a throwing toy, Elephant gives it a nice toss into the air. The friends watch it come back down to earth, where it breaks. Both friends are horrified, and Piggie gets mad. Elephant apologizes, Piggie stays mad, and both friends cry. As all hope seems lost, a squirrel comes over and wants to play with the break-and-snap toy. Piggie tries breaking and snapping her new toy over and over. Forgiven, Elephant declines to play with the new toy. He says that he would rather play with his friend than a toy. The friends abandon the toy and play tag together. Children's friendships are perfectly expressed in this series of early reader books. With careful word selections and pitch-perfect illustrations, Willems captures the lightning fast shifts between humor and pathos in the world of young children. The illustrations are Willems' characteristic style of line drawings in a limited color palette. His simple style belies the complexity of emotion and action his characters convey with their body language. Children will find much familiar in the plots, and Willems' sly humor will delight. Elephant and Piggie stories are terrific for early readers, but they can also be enjoyed by younger children when read to them or by older children who will continue to enjoy Willems' trademark humor. Reviewer: Gwen Vanderhage

K-Gr 2

In classic Willems style, the characters' expressions and body language carry both stories, with the deceptively simple line art saying far more than the slight, though whimsical, texts. When Gerald accidentally breaks Piggie's new toy, he is by turns ashamed, chagrined, and apologetic. Piggie is mad, sad, and finally embarrassed (a squirrel shows them that the "broken toy" is of the "break-and-snap" variety). The pals then decide that playing together is more fun than playing with a toy anyway. In the second title, the two watch a squirrel surprise a friend by jumping out from behind a rock. Mischievous Gerald and Piggie then plan together how to "surprise" one another in the same way. They sit behind opposite sides of a large stone and wait to be surprised. And wait. And wait. And worry. Savvy readers will know exactly what happens when each friend thinks that the other has left. These masterful mini-dramas will delight and amuse easy-reader and picture-book audiences, alike.-Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

    Wonderful Book

My daughter and I love the Elephant & Piggie books. Mo Willems is a wonderful author and illustrator. These books come alive when a child reads them, and I look forward to reading time with my daughter as much as she does. Definitely our favorite books.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great story and illustrations!

As a teacher of 6 and 7 year olds, I can tell you this book is a hit in my classroom! The text is simple and pictures are wonderful, every time I read a Piggie and Elephant book, my students are rolling on the floor with laughter. It's a real treat to see my students then take this book and strive to read it individually. These are my new favorite characters and I would recommend them to everyone I know with children.

A Favorite for a Good Laugh!

The Turkeybird Speaks(My son's opinion, age 3): "Give me a minute...thanks! I needed a second to compose myself. The best part about this book...my mom, reading it to me. She's amazing! If I could get her to read it over and over for hours every day I would, because it's great. Hold on, I think I might be able to get her to read it!...

"Hahaha! That was great, I mean really! You are missing out on life if you haven't read this, because if I'm not mistaken they have studies proving that laughter helps you live longer, right? I can't stop laughing! Haha! Every time I even see this book I have to chuckle, it's so much fun. And if it couldn't get much better, it's all about a toy! Wonderful. Mo Willems is by far one of my favorite authors and illustrators. He's a genius! Go out get this book and read it to the nearest 2 to 4 year old you know, they will love you forever for it."

Mom's Two Cents: "One of my favorite things about this book, The Turkeybird's reaction. I honestly can say that very rarely do I see him light up the way he does when I read this book to him. And who doesn't appreciate that? It was a joy, yet again today when he ran into my room with this book in tow and a huge grin on his face. I'd read it once and then he'd say 'again! again!'. How could I refuse such plea's? It truly was the highlight of my day.

"I Love My New Toy! is the story of a little Piggie (insert the nearest preschool age child in your life) and her adventure getting, losing and regaining a toy and more importantly a friend. Piggie initially chooses to share her toy with her good friend Gerald, but he causes strife by breaking it...or so they think. Piggie goes through a range of emotions and eventually finds that it's better to forgive than hold a grudge. It teaches children that friends are the things to be treasured not just our possessions.

"When we purchased this for The Turkeybird it was in the hopes that it would help him with sharing. I'm not entirely sure that it's helped so far, but it has taught him some other very valuable lessons. It's helped him put names to feelings and emotions he's had. Recently he had a toy break and I think reading the book helped him understand it was okay, he had other toys and friends to play with. He still values the things he has, but I'm pretty sure it's helping him to see they aren't what is important in life.

"A great book with a great message that's also very entertaining. Perfect for reading together between you and your toddler or even a group of toddlers together could be great!"

    LOVELY BOOK!

We just love this book. The illustrations are SO CUTE! They made us all laugh. But this is also a great story with a really good lesson about sharing, greed, anger management & what's really important - all rapped up in a short, easy to read & understand format. My granddaughter who's 4, really enjoyed my reading to her, then went on to PopPop & Mommy to each read it again using their best character voices. Enjoyable all around!

    Brilliant!

Hilarious characters! I absolutely LOVE Piggie and Gerald. They have become a staple on our bookshelf. Not to mention, the dialogue set up in this series is wonderful. My daughter was able to begin to understand how dialogue works in a book thanks to the way the books are set up with each character getting their own colored dialogue "bubble." Awesome books!
