Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Shed's (The Butterfly House) intimate, soft-focus oil portraits add a nostalgic quality to this sweet story of a grandmother recollecting the arrival of her grandchild. "Even before you were born, I was your grandma and I loved you," muses the narrator as if addressing the child directly. She then goes on to enumerate all the wonders of babyhood ("I imagined your soft sighs and sweet smells/ and your tiny toes lined up/ like pink pearls on a necklace") and times shared ("I imagined holding you close,/ rocking you,/ watching you make faces as you dreamed"). Her imaginings span a full year, through baby's first Christmas and birthday ("I saw you eating birthday cake, pink and yellow frosting finger painted across your face") and culminate with the infant's actual birth. Debut children's author Bowen captures the eagerness and anticipation attendant upon the birth of a new family member, and her poetic descriptions ("hands spread out, like little starfish"; "ribbons of autumn sunlight weaving through your hair") brim with sentimental tenderness. Shed's realistic portraits evoke the feeling of a family photo album, including close-ups of the fetching baby and various beaming family members. Just right for sharing on Grandma's lap. All ages. Children's Literature
"Even before you were born, I was your grandma and I loved you." So begins this lovely picture book about a grandmother's dreams for her soon to be born grandchild. The story takes her from feeling the baby kick inside the mother to imagining the birth, and then capturing in her mind's eye the cake that the child will smear on her face at her first birthday party. The grandmother's dreams are as specific as seeing "hands spread out, like little starfish" and toes like "pink pearls on a necklace." The illustrations are a reflection of the lyrical text. The pastel shades are muted and dreamy, yet realistic. The diapers on the tiny newborn's legs, for example, sag. In another picture the eyes capture beautifully the look of a baby surprised after rolling over for the first time. This gentle, loving book is delightful bedtime reading. It is also perfect for every child who ever demanded "tell me about when I was a baby." 2001, HarperCollins, $15.95 and $15.89. Ages All. Reviewer: Stephanie Farrow

PreS-This gentle story celebrates the love of a grandmother for her new grandchild. The opening refrain, "Even before you were born," is repeated throughout the text, coupled with "I loved-," "I wondered-," "I imagined-." The sense of waiting and anticipation is almost tangible, and many of these hoped-for events (smiling at daddy, rolling over, sharing a book) come to fruition in the illustrations. Shed's full-page images are set opposite warm, pastel text pages. The realistic yet soft-edged paintings convey the loving intimacy of family, and perfectly complement the joyful text, which is sweet without being saccharine. A perfect gift for a grandchild and lovely for sharing one-on-one.-Robin L. Gibson, Perry County District Library, New Lexington, OH Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

A must read for all grandmothers & their grandbabies

I found this book when I was hunting for new baby books for my two "step" grandsons. I wanted "first & second time around" brother books for them and was delighted to find this treasure for my impending "bio" grand-daughter. I read it in B&N and cried right there in the store! I have since started buying a copy for all my friends as they become grandmothers. A beautiful plus is that it is about a grandmother reflecting to the baby about her own child, a son, which was the case for me!

I bought this to give to my MIL when we make our 'announcement'. It fit our family perfectly and I can't wait. My MIL will *love* it.

    My Favorite Gift

This book is a gift I gave myself when my son was expecting his first child. I now give it as a shower gift to the mother of the expected baby's father. It is a book every Grandma will cherish.

    A reviewer

I am soon going to become a grandmother for the first time. I wanted to give my daughter and new grandchild a book to let him/her (we don't know yet if it's a boy or girl) that 'I Loved You Before You Were Born' When I saw this book, I knew I had to order it. What a disappointment when it made reference to the fact that it was written as if I were the father's mother. Unfortunately I had to return the book and am now looking for another one to give my new grandchild. The book should have been more generic.

Every mother and grandmother should have this book.

This is the sweetest books I have ever read about children and families. The eloquence and the love shown in this book is remarkable. I have given one to every Grandmother I know. This is a must have for bedtime stories.
