Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A 400-page memoir from the Quiet Beatle? Can it be? Well, yes and no: only about 60 pages of this earnest tome, originally published in 1980, are devoted to Harrison's recollections of life before, during and (notably) after the Beatles. His memories, which manage to feel fresh and distant at the same time, come to readers via transcripts of his conversations with Derek Taylor (1932-1997), the Beatles press officer and ghostwriter of Brian Epstein's memoir. Harrison (1943-2001) was only in his late 30s when I Me Mine came out-the Beatles had formed, changed music forever and disbanded before his 28th birthday. The rest of this volume consists of photos with whimsical captions ("the author enjoying a cheese sandwich with some friends" is assigned to a picture of Harrison with a sitar) and facsimiles of his handwritten lyrics (including a fairly different version of "Taxman"), each accompanied by a brief explanation (ideas expressed in "It's All Too Much," for example, were inspired by LSD and "confirmed in meditation"). Most of the songs were composed after Harrison's immersion in Hinduism; divorced from their melodies, lyrics espousing love, peace and harmony tend to take on a certain sameness. This volume offers much to Beatles zealots, but for the casual fan, Harrison will likely remain as admirable and as inscrutable as ever. B&w photos and illustrations throughout. (Oct.) Library Journal
Guitars gently wept the world over November 29, 2001, when George Harrison succumbed to cancer. Originally released in 1980, this volume includes some very casual recollections by "the quiet one" about his life, including his Liverpool childhood and interest in music, meeting the other kids who would become the 20th century's most influential band, his fascination with Eastern religions, and more. The book features roughly 50 photos taken throughout his life, but the meat of the book is the more than 80 song lyricsDmany of which are reproductions of his hand-written sheets with corrections intactDalong with background on each. There is also a new introduction by Harrison's widow. For millions of diehard fans, there is no such thing as too much information on the Beatles, so this should circulate well. Excellent Book - not just another bio

This is not intended to be a tell all bio. As most of us Beatle & George fans can attest & as Ringo said; there are more versions and stories written and floating around than the Beatles even remembered actually living. Written in George's own words, book includes his notes and writings as he worked out the classic songs of his career. Often he describes why he wrote the song, his own spritual journey or related thoughts. This is an excellent book and nothing like the 100's of tell all books written by so called experts that often differ in their versions of the "truth". Read this book if you want a bit of insight into this searching & sensative man. It is his own words that fill the pages.

    It's All About the Songs

This book was written in 1979 and it is more about the song writing process than an actual autobiography. It is fascinating to see the reproductions of the original hand witten lyrics on envelops, hotel staionary from around the world and anything else that may have been handy. Great insight into George's life can be gleaned from these reproductions as for example in the one for So Sad from 1972 where he originally wrote ' I feel so alone with no Joan of my own' instead of 'love of my own'. Joan being the wife of friend and editor Derek Taylor. This showing George's state of mind two years before the end of his first marriage. Much humour is expressed in the bioraphy section and it is obvious that George went out of his way not to turn it into a tabloid tell-all. The introduction by Olivia Harrison is an articulate, well written, loving and revealing look at what Georges life was like during the time the book was written. Anyone who has an interest in George Harrison's life and music will find this book a must have.

    Very Disappointing

I am a die-hard Beatle's fan and the majority of the books I've read about them I have liked. Cynthia Lennon did a great job in her book 'John'. I, Me Mine has very little information on George Harrison's life. You can find out more about him on web sites or other books. It doesn't mention anything about his marriage and divorce to Patti Boyd and maybe only a sentence or two about his second wife, Olivia Arias. Also just a couple of sentences about his son Dhani. The majority of the book are his song lyrics, which you can download from the Internet. The rest are photographs. Most of these are taken in India with him surrounded by people who are/were into his Eastern Religious beliefs. I understand that George Harrison was a private person, so he shouldn't have written an 'autobiography' in the first place. At least he should not have called this book an autobiography, it isn't. I.E. I thought everyone knew his father was a bus driver but the book makes it sound like it was some deep dark secret that he is sharing with us. As I understand it, Derek Taylor actually wrote the book, Harrison then looked it over and gave a thumbs up or down as to what Derek wrote. I'm hoping that Derek will do a real biography soon. Or perhaps, Olivia and or Dhani or even Patti Boyd. As much as I love books and the Beatles, I have to say the book was a big let down for me. Some people might be happy with it but if I buy an autobigraphy, as it was touted to be , then I do expect an autobiography. Still love George Harrison!
