Children's LiteratureThe author/songwriter is not credited, but this neat little paperback book is designed to be sung, not read, in a back-and-forth style by reader and child; and for this the music is printed on the back cover. When the book is opened, the back third of the right hand page is a flap. On the left hand page there is a large bear. On the top of the flap there is a boy, dressed for outside, with a stuffed rabbit. Words on the page say, "The other day I met a bear, a great big bear, away up there!" When the flap is opened the boy is dressed for inside. He is pulling the rabbit by the ears, and there is a stuffed bear on the floor. The inside words also say, "The other day I met a bear, a great big bear, away up there!" For the remainder of the book, the boy imagines himself being chased by the bear until he is home safe in bed. Because of the recitative of the words outside and inside the flaps, this book would best be enjoyed if one of the readers could read the music, too. 2002, Harper Festival, Ages 2 to 6.
