Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Exercise or movement as it seems to be called in this early reader keeps us healthy. A young boy is shown in a karate kick while another one is hanging upside down on a set of monkey bars. Some kids are walking with their dog while another is running along a beach with his dog. There is a fanciful game of leapfrog and a silly picture of a girl in a basket, while others are riding in a wagon or on a scooter. The most challenging of the sports is climbing up a rock wall. Fortunately this climber is shown with a helmet, gloves, and what appears to be a safety strap. It is perhaps not a sport that would appeal to all. There are several words in the text that are bolded, and they tend to be positional or directional such as high, between, in front, and beside. There is no other key or explanation, though. It would be up to the adult working with the reader to follow up with this concept. Unlike many reader of this type, the vocabulary words are listed on the opening page, and the closing page includes several notes to adults about the content and focus of the book and a suggested activity, which is in addition to the related activities presented on prior pages. Simple declarative sentences on crisp white pages accompanied by photographs of children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds make this an attractive book. This is a level "D" book in the "My World" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
