Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "Rookie Reader" series has been around for years and this is a new subseries entitled "Rookie Read to Learn: All About Me!" The young boy in this story needs help with many things. He asks his mom to help him tie his shoes, read a newspaper, fix a broken toy, zip his jacket, and find his seat in the movie theater. This is one resourceful mom and to show his gratitude he shares his treat. The watercolor illustrations add to the humor with recognizable fairly realistic images of mother and her son. After the story is finished there is a brief blurb about the author and illustrator followed by pages of activities. They include things like a song which is based on a familiar tune; counting to ten, learning about feelings, working through a maze, and creating illustration to ways that adults can be helpful and how kids can help others. The final page contains a list of the 25 words that make up the story. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
