I Never Go Out in the Rain

All Music Guide - Dave Thompson
Spinning out of the recent successes scored by former Strawbs Richard Hudson and John Ford in the guise of the Monks, High Society were intended as a one-off project designed to recapture the music and mood of the 1930s -- a jazzy, cocktail-scented blend that scored a 1980 radio hit with "I Never Go Out in the Rain" -- and have been reconvening for fresh recordings ever since. It's lightweight, tongue-in-cheek, and toe-tapping throughout, a mash of songs that really could have stepped out of a Depression-era speakeasy (or maybe the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby), aside from the fact that they're all band originals. Of course, it's all a very long way from any of Hudson-Ford's better-known musical projects, but the quality never lags and, if you're in the mood for "In the Mood," this will keep you smiling until the moment passes.
