Overview

Spinning out of the recent successes scored by former Strawbs Richard Hudson and John Ford in the guise of the Monks, High Society were intended as a one-off project designed to recapture the music and mood of the 1930s -- a jazzy, cocktail-scented blend that scored a 1980 radio hit with "I Never Go Out in the Rain" -- and have been reconvening for fresh recordings ever since. The 21 songs here chase that career from then until now, sadly omitting any concrete recording and release dates, but confident in knowing that the sound of the band, like that of the era it so expertly re-creates, really doesn't change. It's lightweight, tongue-in-cheek, and toe-tapping throughout, a mash of songs that really could have stepped out of a Depression-era speakeasy (or maybe the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby), aside from the fact that they're all band originals. Of course, it's all a very long way from any of Hudson-Ford's better-known musical projects, but the quality never lags and, if you're in the mood for "In the Mood," this will keep you smiling until the moment passes.
