Engaging in thoughtful reflection about the children of the Holocaust

I am using this book to teach my class of 5th graders about the impact of the Holocaust on the children who were at Terezin. We used Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli as a read-a-loud and this is a follow up closing activity. Most of the children who went through Terezin were between the ages of 7 and early teens and my students are 10 or 11. We used butterflies to represent the young artists and authors in the book and then read later about what happened to them. It is a moving experience to see and hear the students cheer when they hear the specific names of some of the children and they hear they lived to be liberated.

    Amazing Book and Play!!!

I haven't ever read the book, but my middle school's drama club recently did the play, and it was amazing! The whole story of these children, is just incredible. I was on the crew for the play, but the actual play was just breath-taking!

    LOVE THIS BOOK

This is a great book. I also acted in the play version of this, although it pales in comparison to the real book. I recommend this to anyone and everyone

    Awesome

About a month and a half ago, my drama class started rehearsing for our One-Act plays for our finals. I found one called I Never Saw Another Butterfly and we decided it would be one of the plays we'd do. My drama teacher told me all about the actually play and the book it was based off of. I've always found the Holocaust to be...amazing. So I read the book and it's totally awesome. We performed our play yesterday and I played Raja Englanderova. It was very cool! Just like the book. It's so....wow, it sends chills up my spine. Read it!

    Children In Terezin

Through reading this book, I was better able to see the truth in the holocaust and how it affected everyone involved in some way. The emotion in the story is overwhelming. It kept me reading from beginning to end.

    Buy the CD!

I have not actually read this book, but I would like to tell people that the San Francisco Girls Chorus has a CD entitled 'I never saw another butterfly' and there are 9 songs on it with poems by the Children from this concentration camp and it is incredibly beautiful. So if you liked the book you should get the CD.
