Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Carmen Skore is a "Victory School Superstar," part of a new series from Sports Illustrated for Kids. Like other sports superstars, Carmen has "super sport ability," or a special talent that comes naturally. Carmen's talent is for dribbling, as in basketball, but she is sure that she will pick up surfing just as easily when her school takes a trip to Playa Victoria, a sports resort where the students can try out new water and beach sports. To her surprise, she discovers that surfing doesn't come naturally to her, and soon becomes frustrated when she struggles to stay on her board. To add to her frustration, some of the other students do not seem to have as much trouble. Fortunately for her, there is plenty of encouragement, both from the other students and from Evie, the amazing surfer trainer who offers extra lessons. This short chapter book offers little in the way of plot and character development, but plenty of good lessons. The cool book design and cartoon illustrations will probably attract readers looking for books that remind them of their favorite TV programs and computer games. While not outstanding literature, sports fans may enjoy a story about this popular sport. A glossary with unfamiliar surfing terms and a timeline of the sport may also engage interest and send students to search for further reading on the subject. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
