Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Lola is certain that she does not need to go in for an eye test, which she snippily explains to Charlie, her older brother. However, at school, Lola sees that Mini has a pair of colorful, flowery glasses to help her see clearly. Back at home, she tries to convince Charlie that she now needs glasses. Lola's anticipated day at the eye doctor arrives and Lola gets her eyes checked. Her eyes are fine. However, she is deflated because she does not need glasses which she had been waiting to select and wear. Charlie comes up with a plan that appeals and satisfies Lola. Enjoy the antics of Lola as Charlie tells the story. The illustrations are appealing. Charlie and Lola are portrayed as comical, cartoon-ish characters and placed in textured collages which make up the background. Charlie and Lola are characters created by Lauren Child. There are other stories in the "Charlie and Lola" series both televised and in print. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

If you have ever seen the cartoon of these characters on Disney Channel, then you cannot help but play their words in your mind as you read these books. This is not a bad thing, except for me, I continue to "hear" Lola's voice even after I finish reading! This particular story hits home because my own daughter did the same thing. She had heard that glasses were bad, so she didn't want to have them. Then a friend got a pair, and she could not wait to go to the eye doctor to have her vision checked, because she was absolutely certain she needed glasses. When she did not need them, she started to ask if she could have a pair of frames without lenses even! Anyway, Charlie is the best older brother in the world, and he always helps Lola understand her world. It is a great book that is one of many great books. Definitely good for parents of fanciful children with big imaginations! Like I said, check out the cartoons on Disney channel and then read the books. If you like one, you will enjoy the other!
