Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "I Spy" books have been around since the early 1990s. Kids love to search the pictures to find the objects listed. The text is identified as riddles, but it is really just an exercise in listing the items, which can be found in the adjoining illustrations. The text is not a true rebus format because the words precede the image. About three quarters of the way through the book, the format changes and kids are asked to match words and sounds created by certain letter combinations. Kids will need to be readers to benefit from the challenges in the second half of the book. Part of the "Scholastic Reader" series, this is a Level 1 book, which features simple words and short sentences.
