Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan
What do a flamingo, a skunk, and a picnic table all have in common? They are each one in a million. One image on a page of a million things to identify, that is, in this installment of the "I Spy" series of hidden picture books. As usual for this series, no particular plot is followed, as each page spread contains a series of objects with images to match up to the corresponding picture in which they are hidden. While some are more challenging to identify than others, each page presents a cognitive challenge for the reader, and children who love to point out details will enjoy the illustrations, full of some of the most randomly selected objects you can think of. As a level 1 reader, the challenge gets bumped up a notch when the reader is prompted to spy matching words on a page, or words that begin or end with a particular letter. For the very beginning reader who is interested in feeling the sense of achievement that comes with mastering a new concept. As is the case with many of these types of books, the enjoyment is limited to the first or second time reading, as it is difficult to feel a sense of accomplishment in finding something that is in the same place every time. My child responded very well to this book -- I'll be buying more.

My grandson can hardly wait to come over every weekend and search for everything. We spend hours as a team looking for the objects. Sure beats sitting in front of a TV! He takes his job as a five year old detective very seriously and even wears his police costume as he searches. It's his favorite book and the time we share makes it my favorite book too.
