Overview

Lucy is now a fully-fledged assistant investigator and Kane gives her a case of her own to solve ― a murder/suicide which may not be quite what it seems. Meanwhile, Kane has his own case to deal with as, once more, he is drawn into the dangerous world of drug traffickers.

In Book 6, Kane and Lucy find themselves with two cases to investigate: one an apparent murder/suicide and the other a tragic accident ― or was it? As they struggle to make sense of the apparently contradictory evidence they discover that neither case is as straightforward as it appears.

When the police discover the body of Cynthia Hughes in the kitchen floor and her husband Bob hanged in the garage it seems like an open-and-shut case ― but Bob’s mistress, Angela, doesn’t buy it and she hires Kane and Lucy to find the real killer. Meanwhile Mike Kingsley’s son has died after being struck by a train and the police have ruled it an accidental death. But was it?

As Kane and Lucy struggle with the two cases simultaneously they discover that they have something in common ― neither case is quite what it seems to be…

Meet the Author

John Hemmings is a lawyer and writer of crime fiction with a one hundred percent record: not one of his clients has been executed – yet! Some of his stories are suggested by cases he has been involved with, but names have been changed to protect the innocent – and sometimes the guilty!

Each of his books features Boston private investigator Mark Kane, or simply Kane as he is known to most people, and his longtime companion, Lucy – a slightly oddball couple with a somewhat unconventional relationship.

"I write for enjoyment – the sort of books that I hope have broad appeal in the mystery/detective genre; the kind of books I like to read myself – and as a family man I write for all ages: the sex private (even private eyes like a bit of privacy!), the language tempered. Take a look at those movies from the thirties and forties: Edward G Robinson, Cagney, Bogart. The lack of strong language didn't take away anything from the air of menace those guys exuded. Of course, they wouldn't have talked like that in real life; but then a movie or a novel is not 'real life'.

"I have tried to make the stories as realistic as possible, although these books are intended as entertainments, so a little 'poetic license' and the invoking of a 'willing suspension of disbelief' is sometimes required. As for 'character development', this is a series told in real time; so while each book is a standalone story, as the reader progresses through the books more is gradually revealed about my protagonist and his sidekick. Readers sometimes ask me what Kane & Lucy look like; but as to their physical appearance well, that's the beauty of books over movies – they look just like each reader imagines they look."

I have read them all and I just can't say enough of reading not only the progression of the characters but the progression of an author. I have found this just wonderful. This newest book provides multiple plots, a little more insight into Kane and Lucy but also Kane's brother, and is a real page turner. The book provides you really all the information you need to solve the mysteries, but it is not so blatant that you lose interest. This one keeps you going until the last chapter. It does have a touch of the 40's movies and books of the great fictional detectives. While a lot of mysteries seem to involve a police officer, this twist makes a much more interesting book. How they must maneuver while working within the law to get the results. GREAT JOB! Keep them coming!
