Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ann Sanger
Images by Walter Wick were taken from the book I Spy Christmas published in 1992. Cartwheel Books, a division of Scholastic, Inc., has developed the "Scholastic Reader" series with Level 1 through Level 4. This book is from Level 1 and includes short sentences and simple words which can be sounded out phonetically by the newest readers. Guided by parents or teachers a very young child can match the object in the full page photograph with the word and picture on the opposite side. My two-year-old grandson had no trouble finding the objects in the ten charming and nostalgic scenes of Christmas. At the end of the book students are challenged to match words and objects that rhyme, or letters and sounds that begin a word or are found at the end of a word. Along with the "Fluency Fun" which includes seventeen high frequency words, parents can help students with the sight recognition drills. These skills will help young students recognize common syllables and spelling patterns. This book is a good choice for preschool students.
