Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Matthew Chisling
Idina Menzel is not known for being a pop artist. Rather, she is most classically known for originating two modern Broadway dream roles: the outspoken lesbian Maureen in the long-running Rent, and the misunderstood Elphaba in Wicked, a role that garnered Menzel a Tony award. Throughout her musical theater career, Menzel attempted to capitalize on her fame and go for pop stardom; her first swing at bat was a frazzled alternative album that couldn't find a proper fan base, the second attempt was a collection of Broadway cover songs, something that never materialized into success. Thus, twelve years after Menzel first graced the stage as Maureen, Menzel releases I Stand. In order to create the perfect pop album, she drafted Glen Ballard, the producer best known for his work on the 16-times platinum Alanis Morisette album Jagged Little Pill. Along with Ballard, Menzel co-wrote most of the lyrics and created a set of pop songs for her most mainstream release yet. Ultimately, the result is a mixed bag. Menzel's voice is staunchly characteristic; it doesn't necessarily format to the catchy synthetics of 2007, and the songs feel inconsistent. "Where Do I Begin?" is awkward at times, as Menzel's musical roots funnel through. The tracks scatter between pop, adult contemporary, and Broadway. On that note, though, a lovely remix of the much acclaimed show tune "Defying Gravity" is pleasant on this collection of tunes. "Brave" is an empowering personal ballad which is a marvel; it's a better version of an American Idol finale song, minus the corny confetti. Plus, the dance track "Gorgeous" is a strong, upbeat number which flows in a similar vein to Kelly Clarkson's "You Found Me." Unfortunately, many of the tracks are impressive but not impressionable. "Forever," "My Own Worst Enemy," and "Better to Have Loved" are indistinguishable among one another. And at only 11-tracks long, Menzel really needed to make a stronger mark on the songs in order to impress a listener. Yet some tracks manage to characterize her better than others, "I Stand" is a personal tune that glistens with potential, and "Don't Let Me Down" is a piano-influenced, midtempo piece that appeals to both a younger and older crowd while maintaining artistic creativity. Finally, "Perfume and Promises" is the most "Menzel" track on the album; it characterizes her best. Ironically, she didn't even pen it, yet it dazzles and spins her voice into a weaving ballad of love and pain. Unfortunately, it is one of too few, and there isn't enough creative definition; Ballard smoothed out Menzel's edges too much, to the point where she falls into the crowd of solid yet insatiable artists who are pleasant, if not punching. Menzel deserves mounds and heaps of praise, and I Stand shows much potential in the big-voiced wonder; the tunes, however, don't support her talent and potential.

Idina Menzel has a new album, &#8220 I Stand&#8221 . Idina sings beautifully. This album is incredible and very emotional. I love the real, and honest lyrics. Her songs are so deep, and have so much meaning. This is a fantastic album. Everyone should buy it! Idina Menzel is an American Tony Award winning actress, singer and songwriter who achieved fame for her performances as Maureen Johnson in the Broadway and film versions of Rent and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the musical Wicked.

After hearing so much about Idina and her newly anticipated album, &quot I Stand&quot , I knew I had to have the cd. So I just have to say I was not disappointed. Idina's voice is amazing and hard to beat. Each song is different on it's own but put together on the album, a perfect fit. There is something on this album for everyone!

Idina amazes us all once again with her versatility. The album is a truly rare and "gorgeous" combination of songs that explores so many issues and emotions. Each time I listen to it, I connect in some new and amazing way. Every track leaves me speechless with its unique message and tone. Idina's music goes beyond what words can describe.

Idina Menzel delivers another top performance with this new CD &amp quot I Stand&amp quot . The title track is incredible as her voice bellows out, you just get goose bumps listening to it. Track 07 &amp amp 09 are also wonderful. I highly recommend this CD if you are an Menzel fan or even if you like any new age sounding music.

On this her third solo album, Idina Menzel's &quot I Stand&quot is able to seamlessly combine her impeccable stage voice and presence into a pop CD. Best known for her roles in the Broadway musicals &quot Rent&quot and &quot Wicked&quot , this Tony award winning actress is able to prove that she is able to sing pop tunes with the grace and class that she brings to show tunes. The CD has exactly what you would expect from Idina: strong vocals that demonstrate her range both musically and stylistically. For the most part, the songs speak of empowerment and hope. &quot I Stand&quot is a classic pop ode to the things we find important and make us unique. &quot Gorgeous&quot has a catchy Latin vibe and show cases Idina's unbelievable voice. &quot Enemy&quot is a song about self sabotage that has a surprisingly edgy sound to both the vocals and the accompaniment. This CD is great for anyone that appreciates true talent. It does not have all the electronically added vocals heard with most of the pop CDs on the charts today. It doesn't have lyrics that are explicit or seductive. It has melody. It has dynamics. It has true vocal talent with no need for dubbing or distractions. It has Idina.

I love this album! Idina has such an amazing and powerful voice. She pours so much emotion into each song and I find her emphasis on inner strength to be inspiring. I pre-ordered this item and was not disappointed.

A great album to listen to while unwinding from a long day or during the commute. Favorite songs include&quot Brave&quot and &quot I Stand.&quot

What a lovely album. Starting with &quot Forever&quot to the indie feeling &quot I feel everything&quot , the gorgeous &quot Gorgeous&quot to the plaintive &quot Perfume and Promises&quot and the inspiring &quot I Stand&quot and &quot Brave&quot this album has something for everyone. My favorite was &quot Forever&quot , makes you wish for heartache so you could truly sing along, but since we have all been there once it is universal. All in all, it is a good album which will be finding a place on my Ipod. Love the packaging, no plastic.

Have you heard of Idina Menzel yet? If not, trust me...you will! Idina will melt your heart... First, she played Maureen in the off-Broadway and film version of Rent. Then, she was the amazing green girl, &amp quot Elphaba&amp quot , in her Tony award winning performance in Wicked. Now, she is lighting up the music scene with a fabulous CD, &amp quot I Stand&amp quot , of her original songs! Talk about a TRIPLE THREAT! I had an amazing opportunity to see Idina on tour this week at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida. She brought such an energy of excitement and intimacy to the stage! She was comfortable and elegant...funny and real. She shared about her &amp quot wedding singer&amp quot roots beginning at age 15 - it was hysterical to see her create the persona of a big-haired, sequined gowned teen adrift in the lounge-lizard sea of NY! I can't encourage you enough to catch her when ever possible - and certainly invest in the new CD! See my contest below... Songs to pay particular attention to include my favorites &amp quot Better to Have Loved&amp quot , &amp quot I Stand&amp quot , and &amp quot Defying Gravity&amp quot . She's such a warm and lovely person on stage - her stage presence and connection with the audience was amazing! She reaches into her soul and captures the essence of love, loss, and adventure....and takes a stand for individuality...WOW!

I picked this CD up today and it has been playing all day long at my house. Absolutely beautiful music - uplifting lyrics, great musicianship and a very powerful voice. This is going to replace my other favorite Idina CD - Wicked. A huge talent.

One of the most personal, amazing, touching, beautiful albums to be released in a long time.

And I'll say it again: I love this album!!! Idina has such a powerful voice, and all the songs are co-written by her, minus one song, "Don't Let Me Down". But, if you didn't know it, you'd think it was written by her! I highly recommend: "Brave", "Gorgeous", "Forever", "Where Do I Begin?" and "I Stand". All the songs are great!!!!! You will NOT be disappoined if you get this album.

I truly had no idea who Idina Menzel was when I first heard the name. Then my 15-year old son pointed out I did know her from the Disney Movie, Enchanted. Hmmm...now I had a face. Then he added she was on Broadway and had performed in Wicked and Rent. Suddenly, there was a voice. The album, I Stand, followed and I must admit, I was taken by the power in the voice and the lyrics. Idina Menzel will leave you in awe at her voice range and the emotion with which she sings. I Stand is an album that will have you coming back for more and each time discovering something new in the message. There are ten songs that will leave you wanting more. I was surprised to discover that in addition to her great voice, she also wrote the songs on this album, which was produced by Glen Ballard--you know the name from Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill and most recent album, Flavors of Entanglement. I Stand is an album that appeals to everyone. My children ages 2-18 enjoy the music and are starting to sing along, we've listened to it so often. Definately a &quot must have&quot for any music collection.

I've heard this record many times, each one against my will. I didn't enjoy it the first time and it's become successively worse with each listen. The lyrics are contrived, generic, and pathetic and the melodies become monotonous within two minutes of play. There is very little originality or creativity at play here and I recommend avoiding this one. Listen to Regina Spektor, Neko Case, Feist, Imogen Heap, or Laura Veirs if you want to hear some brilliant female singing/songwriting.

Idina is of course most well known in the world of musical theatre, but this is her chance to tell her own story and speak to us in her true voice. Her poignant lyrics have the power to connect to everyone her beautiful delivery of the songs has the ability to touch the heart. Some people might criticize that her voice is too powerhouse and belongs only on Broadway, but I believe that her music can also find its place in the pop world- it is much too amazing and incredible not to belong here as well.
