Children's Literature - Bonita Herold
Dreading his future in Chicago, Oscar leaves the farm his papa carved out of prairie and unwillingly boards the train with his mother and new stepfather. The constant chug of the train ride does little to alleviate his alarm. The ugliness encountered as he enters the Queen of the West is made even worse at the station when their suitcases are stolen. Oscar sees an opportunity to follow the little girl who had tricked him and takes it. He soon learns that everything is not as it appears, but one thing is real: the fire. Evidence of it is everywhere. Sparks rain down. Dry timber immediately bursts into flames. He is caught in an inferno, coughing, burned, and fighting for his very life. Tarshis has written an intriguing version of the great Chicago Fire and successfully captures the city as it goes down in flames. Readers are often amazed that anyone survives the catastrophic events captured in the “I Survived” series. In this book in particular, readers feel for Oscar as he tries to help two orphans find their way. Reviewer: Bonita Herold; Ages 7 to 10.

Lauren tarshis is a great author of the I survived series. Well lets just say she isent perfect and no one is. But i think her stories are just so lovly to read and the main characters are brave strong and warm hearted. Like how Ness trys to save him mother in the very begging. Well there is time when you have to deal with the painful things, not always the good things. But things change and then things get a little better than before. Ness is really brave. And i fell bad for him because in the very begging his mother dies. Sometimes nightmares come true. And unexpectful thing happens sometimes. Life isent much so easie sometimes. I know that without his mother, it is hard for him. Know that his heart is broken. Sometimes in the series i survived, it a good timing when you think to you self, boy, I am so lucky to have a great mom and dad and great food and i am alsoo lucky that am in school and mom and dad cares for you.
