Children's Literature - Beth-Anne White
Ben is in a difficult place, emotionally he is grieving the death of his father, and now physically as he must survive the tsunami that is ravaging Japan. Lauren Tarshis takes readers on a journey with Ben to discover how it might have felt to survive the Japanese Tsunami of 2011. By allowing readers to sympathize with Ben and all his troubles, they will better be able to sympathize and understand what a terrible disaster the tsunami was for those living there. The short chapters will keep the reader wanting to know what happens next. This is a good book for middle readers who are moving from pictures books and needing more of a challenge, but at the same time who do not need to be overwhelmed by long chapter books. Lauren Tarshis includes facts about the Japanese Tsunami at the end of the book. She also names two other books that talk about tsunamis and provides a link to where she has listed the materials used to gather information for writing this novel. Reviewer: Beth-Anne White; Ages 8 to 10.
