A destructive force is about to hit the city of Joplin...

Eleven-year-old Dexter has always wanted to see a tornado. So when he gets the incredible opportunity to go storm chasing with the famous Dr. Norman Rays, he has to say yes!  Dr. Rays is the host of Tornado Mysteries, the show that Dex and his older brother, Jeremy, watched every night until Jeremy joined the U.S. Navy SEALs and left Joplin.

Dex certainly knows how deadly tornadoes can be, but this one isn't heading toward Joplin, and wouldn't it be great to have a brave and exciting story of his own to tell Jeremy when he comes home? But when the tornado shifts direction, Dexter's bravery is about to get seriously tested...

Children's Literature - Ann Cannon
When eleven-year-old Dexter is invited to go storm chasing by a friend of the family, Dr. Gage, his dream of seeing a tornado becomes reality. This is a story of a fictional character who lived through a real event and how he survived. On May 22, 2011, a tornado struck Joplin, Missouri. This natural disaster and storm was rated an EF5 (killer storm). This storm was responsible for 158 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries. Peaking to a mile wide with winds over 200 miles per hour, Dexter was in the middle of one of the deadliest tornados. Numerous incidents forced him to take action and act bravely. This novel is part of the “I Survived” series, which will interest middle grade readers. The expressive illustrations and descriptions portray the tragedy of the storm and its aftermath. The events depicted are very intense and vivid, and could be frightening for younger children. This is an inspiring story of courage conquering fear. As the events unfold, specific facts about storms and the disaster are documented, making it a good teaching aid. Reviewer: Ann Cannon; Ages 7 to 10.
