Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
The "I Want a Pet" series of early readers touches on a subject dear to many kids' hearts, owning a pet. Large text and limited word count per page introduce the topic with the query, "wouldn't you like to have a hamster?" This highlights the joys while the rest of the book delves into the responsibilities of pet ownership. There are special requirements for a hamster home. They can live in a cage or an aquarium. A specific location needs to be identified for the hamster home. Hamsters need attention and care every day. The bedding in the cage needs to be cleaned once a week. If it gets sick, the hamster may need to go to a veterinarian. A few tips on selecting a hamster and the supplies required help the reader to understand that the decision to own a hamster comes with responsibilities. Large photographs of children and hamsters illustrate the text helping the reader to easily put herself in the picture and imagine being a hamster owner. A glossary, word count, and index are included with reading suggestions and access to researched internet links. Reviewer: Kristin Harris

PreS-Gr 2—Each spread of these large-format books features a few sentences opposite a large color photo. Together, they provide basic facts about selecting pets, purchasing necessary equipment, and caring for the animals. The children and adults in many of the photos look stiff and posed. Controlled vocabulary and simple sentence structure can provide reading practice for the target audience. However, due to the limitations of the format and the resulting scarcity of information, potential pet owners will need to look elsewhere for in-depth information about ownership. At the time of review, the ASPCA links included in the publisher's suggested websites list go to the cat-care section for all four books.
