Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
A major part of the fashion world happens behind the scenes. In this book, aspiring designers will be introduced to the history of fashion, schools for fashion careers, fabrics, and famous designers. The fashion vocabulary will also help the reader understand the cat-walk lingo. The book covers the trade in America, and its counterparts in other countries. The last section introduces a teenage entrepreneur who invented a fashion and now operates a successful business. Each section is enhanced with colorful photos that will encourage young readers to explore the different aspects of a fast-paced industry. Kids will soon appreciate the historical aspects as well as the current appeal of the fashion design. Part of the "I Want to Be" series. 2000, Harcourt Brace & Company, $9.00. Ages 10 to 12. Reviewer: D. Cannon SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This book is just packed with information, and it takes a serious look at the world of fashion design. Readers can go behind the scenes of a fashion show, or follow the design process as a garment is created. There are many color photographs and line drawings on every single page, and the color, glamour and plain hard work of people in this field really comes across. There is a section on the history of fashion design, beginning in the ancient world, as well as chapters on fashion programs in elementary and high schools, related careers, fabrics, and famous designers. The last chapter is about a fourteen-year-old girl who successfully designs and makes a fingerless fleece hand protector in her thriving business. There's an extensive list of sources in the back, with fashion organizations, museums, publications, and trade shows. Dedicated "to all children who dream the impossible dreams," this book could certainly inspire and guide those who feel this particular call. It is part of the "I Want to Be" book series. 1999, Harcourt Brace, Ages 10 up, $18.00 and $9.00. Reviewer: Nancy Partridge—Children's Literature
