Overview

A hilarious book by Richard M. Cohen, the New York Times bestselling author of Blindsided and Strong at the Broken Places, about living with his wife, Meredith Vieira, and her band of difficult dogs.

“Has a couple ever gone to war or a spouse moved to another country because a pet came between them? Have two people other than my wife and me ever had such opposing feelings when it comes to domestic animals?”

So wonders Richard M. Cohen, who has endured the beasts his wife, Meredith Vieira, has brought into the house to enrich their lives. Despite her unshakable affection for these furry creatures, the various animals have destroyed the serenity of a once calm household. Friends watch in stunned silence as the family frantically struggles to keep peace in this lawless land. Delivery people have fled in fear. Guests have cowered or simply laughed at the hideous shrieks, the current mutt’s stab at intimidation. Then there are the cats that think they are ferocious jungle creatures. Weary of having animals run the show, Richard is fed up. These animals are destroying a home, and the life of one simple soul who seeks only peace and quiet. The King has been overthrown. The Queen and her court have taken over. That would be Meredith and her minions.

I Want to Kill the Dog is more than a countercultural ode to those weary of the pet pedestal. It is a portrait of a marriage and of the redemptive power of humor and family when banishing the beast is not an option.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Drivel. When Master Cohen vanishes some night, Jasper will have a quiet smile on his face and will probably never bark again.” – Meredith Vieira, spouse and dog lover

“In [Cohen’s] hilarious new book, I Want to Kill the Dog, he reveals that even Meredith drives the people who adore her crazy thanks to her obsession with the family pets.” –Redbook

“Cohen's droll sense of humor (and love for Meredith) is to our benefit—he invites us to laugh at his expense, even as Jasper howls, lunges, snarls at anyone approaching Meredith, and ‘enriches their life’ on the carpet. A laugh-out-loud counter to the dog-book genre by an author whose good humor belies his expressions of murderous frustration.” –Shelf Awareness for Readers

“A funny look at modern family life and the strong kinship dog owners develop with their four-legged companions.” –Mike Cuthbert, Prime Time Radio

Cohen has written a good, humorous, somewhat sarcastic, straight-to-the-point book. But why do they charge ten bucks for an adequate, 56 page book? I don't know. I'd rethink your decision of buying this book.

Was the author hiding in my house when he wrote this book? I can relate 100 percent to everything in this book. Everything in this book has happened in this house. Always taking a backseat to dogs and cats that my wife and kids would bring in against my wishes. Even today, with all the kids grown and gone, I still have a dog that was my son's but he couldn't take it with him when he moved out. I hate that stupid dog.
