Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
The obstreperous Little Princess returns to learn a new lesson and teach it to young readers. For although she wants to win all the time, she can't. So she changes the rules, and at home everyone lets her win the games. But at school, where there are trophies for everything, the Little Princess wants to win them all. And she does try, but her cousin wins the Math Trophy. And although she tries her "HARDEST" at painting, science, and writing her poem, Polly wins the Painting Trophy, Poppy wins the Poetry Trophy, and Darren wins the Science Trophy. The Little Princess sobs with disappointment. But the last trophy, the best, is for "TRYING THE HARDEST," and that she wins "fair and square." Ross's black ink outline and transparent watercolors create simple characters that effectively communicate their emotions. He uses single pages with caption-like text to visualize the actions. He also gives us eighteen pictures of his Little Princess in different action poses across the end pages. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

PreS-Gr 1—Little Princess is determined to bring home all of the big trophies at school. She tries her hardest in each subject, agonizing at the chalkboard over math problems, flinging paint onto her canvas in the art room, struggling to compose a poem, and causing an explosion in the science lab. Alas, each trophy goes to someone else. "It's not fair," she sobs. But one small trophy still stands on the shelf, unnoticed. To her utmost delight, she wins it for "TRYING THE HARDEST… fair and square!" The quirky pen, ink, and watercolor illustrations, which are replete with amusing details, enliven the simple, sweet story. The protagonist's facial expressions are particularly comical. Fans will cheer on Little Princess in her quest for victory.—Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA
