Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jillian Kobelin
It's important for little ones to feel safe and protected, and this book offers reassuring words and illustrations to help them feel secure. Each page depicts baby animals in their unique shelter, cozy in the loving arms of a parent. The scenes range from bears in a den to beavers in a lodge, and each animal is being protected from a threat or menace from its environment. The dolphins are kept safe from the crashing waves, the robins are kept safe from the rain, and even the typically scary alligator is kept safe from the heat of the sun. When a kitten gets lost in the dark night, children will feel relieved when the page is turned and it is found and kept safe and sound by its mother. The rhyming scheme creates a gentle lullaby, which makes this book ideal for bedtime. The soft-hued illustrations echo the comforting tone of the book. Reviewer: Jillian Kobelin

PreS—Essentially a short illustrated poem, this title depicts beatifically smiling baby animals and their grown-ups cuddling in their dens, nests, and other dwellings-"Gators in the shade/While the sun burns high/Squirrels in the log/While the hawk sails by," etc. On each spread, a full-page illustration of the animals faces two lines of the poem in large black font, with a smaller illustration under it. The refrain, "I will keep you safe and sound," lends a soothing, lullabylike cadence, while watercolor and pencil illustrations create a sleepy, calm atmosphere. This cozy somnolence is temporarily disturbed by a lost kitten that is immediately found by the mama cat. The reassuring message of this book-that parents are there to care for and protect their offspring-as well as the large illustrations and spare text, will appeal to a very young audience. A sweet but additional choice.—Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY
Kirkus Reviews
Spare text in rhyming couplets and a soothing refrain provide young readers with a cozy glimpse of animal babies and their parents enjoying their natural habitats. Houran chooses language that describes the scene in a succinct but quiet manner: "Gators in the shade / While the sun burns high / Squirrels in the log / While the hawk sails by / Dolphins in the cove / While the wild waves pound / I will keep you safe and sound." Brown bears, rabbits, robins, beavers and ponies complete the cast of creatures featured in Brown's soft-hued watercolor, gouache and pencil illustrations. Each spread features a full-bleed picture on the left paired with a spot illustration and the text on the right. Only the ending offers a slight break from this pattern as a lost kitten (after a slightly dramatic page turn) quickly reunites with its mother under the glowing full moon. The design and flow seem best suited for the very young--the most likely audience to be charmed by the singsong cadence and the relative sweetness of the title. Though well-intentioned and decently executed, nothing new or exciting lies within. (Picture book. 1-4)
