Children's Literature - Summer Whiting
Manuel wishes he was tall like his best friend, Willie. Willie is so tall that he could be a famous basketball player. Playing outside with his buddy, Manuel sometimes stands on stilts. He loves being tall! He spikes his hair as high as it can go so he will look as tall as possible. But it does not last. By the time recess rolls around, his hair is a mess. Still, he does not give up in his quest for being tall. Manuel thinks that raising the seat on his bicycle will make him look taller. It is useless. He cannot reach the pedals. Manuel even sticks rolled up socks in his shoes. It makes him an entire two inches taller! Too bad he cannot walk. Then, Manuel has the chance to play Abraham Lincoln in the school play. For a brief moment, he is the tallest kid around! But when his hat gets snarled in the curtain, he learns that being tall all of the time is not so great after all. He still wishes he was tall like Willie at times … and Willie wishes he was strong like Manuel. This charming story can be read aloud to complement a guidance lesson in the primary grades. It is an excellent story that can help teach children that everyone has something unique and special to offer. Reviewer: Summer Whiting
