Overview

A young boy has all sorts of wishes for Santa, but what would Christmas really be like if Santa marched to a different drummer? Endearing pictures and a fanciful story suggest the delightful possibilities.

Christmas is coming, and Maxie has wishes. “Mommy, I wish Santa would come by helicopter.” So begins a loving, charmingly illustrated give-and-take between a boy and his mother, in which his fantasies run wild and she sweetly brings him back to reality again. When he hopes that Santa will help them trim their tree, Mom wonders: “Then, Maxie, who would trim Santa’s tree?” When he longs to have Santa join them for dinner, Mama points out that a jolly, roly-poly man and his 8 reindeer would eat quite a lot. But, of course, holiday dreams do come true, and maybe, on Christmas morn, Santa will be there.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
While his family decorates the tree and shares a turkey dinner on Christmas Eve, Maxie thinks up a million ideas. He wishes Santa could fly by in a helicopter, or that Santa would read him a story, or that Santa could bring them a motorboat. His mother patiently counters each suggestion and gently nudges him toward bed. Fantastic images of Santa fill Maxie's dreams, and the next morning he sees that some of his wishes came true. Whimsical illustrations depict the family's preparations for Christmas. 2004, Sterling, Ages 3 to 7.
—Dr. Judy Rowen
School Library Journal
PreS-As Maxie eats dinner and gets ready for bed on Christmas Eve, he keeps making wishes (that Santa would come by helicopter, that Santa could help trim the family tree) and his mother has a ready response each time ("Then, Maxie, who would drive his sled?" "Who would trim Santa's tree?"). Although the illustrations are cheerful and childlike, the boy's wishes and his mother's replies are uninteresting, and the sight of Santa flying by in a helicopter on Christmas morning does nothing to liven things up. An uninspired offering.-E. M. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
