I Wonder...Did Jesus Have a Pet Lamb?

by Janette Oke, Corbert Gauthier (Illustrator)

We know a lot about the baby Jesus and Jesus as a man. But what about Jesus as a boy? What was he like? I Wonder takes a creative look at what the life of the boy Jesus might have been like. Perhaps he had a pet lamb, liked to build with blocks, or went fishing with his grandpa. The book is imaginatively illustrated and contrasts contemporary children and toys.

Overview

We know a lot about the baby Jesus and Jesus as a man. But what about Jesus as a boy? What was he like? I Wonder takes a creative look at what the life of the boy Jesus might have been like. Perhaps he had a pet lamb, liked to build with blocks, or went fishing with his grandpa. The book is imaginatively illustrated and contrasts contemporary children and toys. Accurate depictions of the Holy Land 2,000 years ago provide the backdrop for captivating scenes of childlike pursuits. Ideal for families and Sunday school teachers.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
What did Jesus do after he was a baby, but before he became a grownup? This book leads children to wonder about the "hidden years." Did his grandpa take him fishing? "Did he sit on the bank...while he waited for a pull on his fishing line?" The pictures show a young Jesus fishing with a pole, which is doubtful. Did he build with left-over wood? What did he eat? Did he get along with other boys? Did his mother save his first tooth? The illustration shows the upper incisor as the lost tooth, which is unlikely. The text mentions "shells he had gathered beside the sea," also doubtful since his hometown, Nazareth, was inland and people rarely traveled. The colored illustrations show children with strange-looking, disproportional heads. This book may encourage children to imagine answers to questions asked, but there is little to offer realistic answers from this time in history. 2004, Bethany House Publishers/Baker Book House Company, Ages 4 to 8.
