Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
This volume in the question-and-answer series takes a look at the five senses. In addition to the human senses, questions relating to animal senses are answered as well. The book is formatted so that, on each two-page spread, three questions are answered with short paragraphs that leave plenty of room for a variety of illustrations. Sprinkled along the edges are short points of interest, each accompanied by a humorous cartoon. This is a nice addition to the genre, with easy-to-read text and an interesting variety of illustrations. The text covers the basics of the five senses, explains how they work, and covers interesting topics like why ice cream can give you a headache. The illustrations have nice variety, including detailed drawings of parts of the body, realistic drawings and cartoon images. One small quibble comes with the text asserting that dogs see only shades of gray. A quick Google search provides the information that most recent research shows that dogs do see some color. That issue aside, this is a good addition to primary collections.
