In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer.

The closest thing to experiencing true Spain - all of it - without boarding a plane!

I read this book several years ago prior to my first trip to Spain. My first Michener book, I was fascinated with his ability to introduce me to the land and its people from a perspective almost impossible to experience in today's high-tech world of media-sponsored travel. Reading the book I felt as though I were sipping coffee at the table next to the 'tertulia', I could see the lines in the faces of the Extremaduran men and women, and I could sense the unparalleled diversity of the country's topography and cultural heritage. My wife, daughter, and I are relocating to Spain next month, and since this will be their first experience with the country, I am now re-ordering the book to share it with them so that they, too, might have 'the perfect backdrop' for such a unique place.

    more from this reviewer

essential reading prior to traveling to Spain

Michener shares his love of Spain with the reader while also sharing the geology, history, customs and quirks of Spain. I would not have enjoyed my two weeks in Spain nearly as much if I hadn't read this wonderful book.
