Ice Crown:

Roane, a young archaeologist, makes planetfall on a previously off-limits world where the inhabitants have been implanted with false memories and conditioned to obey their oligarchic masters. Now Roane must fight to save the enslaved populace and her own inner essence by finding a powerful artifact that could bring new freedom to a planet that has spent eons in darkness.

Brother to Shadows:

Jofre, a young initiate to the assassin’s guild in a far future world, is betrayed and cast out by a corrupt nemesis–a priest with designs upon powerful, near-magic technology secreted somewhere on the planet. These two are very good, and not even my personal favorite Andre Norton books. The first is, or was, "Ice Crown" and a rare one with a female as the central character. She is stuck as ward of her career-focused Uncle and his self-focused son. She is there on sufferance. There is a touch of wry humor here, which editors of the time would seldom allow, being convinced that only very young teenage boys read sci-fi, and they hadn't been issued a sense of humor. Idiots! Of course our girl comes out on top. They are being sent to a closed planet to recover something that has been hidden there. Read and enjoy. The second was "Brother to Shadows." Although the main character is a young man, there is a female character of equal abilities. The editors were learning! The main character is a foundling from a space lifeboat of unknown origin, and is raised by a highly respected order of mercenaries who live like monks and are contracted out. This order includes a priesthood that has its own agenda, who get him expelled and want him dead. He ends up contracting himself to another off-world visitor and getting off planet before they can carry out their plans for him. On the trip he discovers one of the female side of his order, with a skill set of her own. There are scrapes and dangerous situations on planets from which they have to extract themselves. Underneath are still the machinations of the spiteful priesthood. Will they work together? Or will they end up pitted against each other! And what is the Thieves Guild up to and how are they involved in all this?
