Overview

Book #1 of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling series!

Anthony Hetheridge, ninth Baron of Wellegrave, Chief Superintendent for New Scotland Yard, never married, no children, no pets, no hobbies, and not even an interesting vice, will turn sixty in three weeks. With the exception of his chosen career, too sordid for his blue-blooded family to condone, his life has been safe and predictable. But then he meets Detective Sergeant Kate Wakefield – beautiful, willful, and nearly half his age. When Hetheridge saves the outspoken, impetuous young detective from getting the sack, siding with her against Scotland Yard's powerful male hierarchy, his cold, elegantly balanced world spins out of control. Summoned to London's fashionable Belgravia to investigate the brutal murder of a financier, Hetheridge must catch the killer while coping with his growing attraction to Kate, the reappearance of an old flame, and the secret that emerges from his own past.

I was immediately intrigued by Anthony Hetheridge, although the opening is a bit distant and takes a while to settling into Hetheridge's present POV. The character voice pulled me into the story as I learned a few important facts about the man. Once the story settled into his POV it moved smoothly, there were a lot of wonderful little character details. And then I met Kate. The interaction between these two characters--all the characters, really--would have kept me reading just about anything. They're funny, flawed, realistically drawn and very well written. The budding romance between Kate and Tony was absolutely adorable, and the real person feel of the characters made me cheer and fear for them. The dialogue was wonderful and had me laughing out loud more than once. I always think that the sign of good dialogue when I just have to tell someone else about it, and my fiancé heard quite a bit while I was reading. There were some issues with the story, of course. I thought there could have been more separation and character development between scenes like the taking of people's statements, for instance. These recountings sometimes occurred in large blocks of dialogue and I think it could have been broken down and livened up a little. Toward the end, the story slowed down for me. I felt the mystery elements--although well researched--needed some fine tuning. They could have been more energetic, and at times they felt more like background than plot. Kate also seemed more like the main character than I'd expected, since the summary is all about Tony, and I would have liked to get more into Tony's head. I didn't understand him as well as I understood Kate, but since this is the first book in a series, I expect to get to know him better as the story progresses. Ms. Jameson engineered a few surprises that I never saw coming, and I enjoyed the twists that situations took. While I wasn't entirely surprised by the killer, I liked the way the situation was handled. It was different, provided interesting new bits of characterization and story for later in the series, and showed that Ms. Jameson does not need her heroes to be perfect, cardboard cutouts. She continued to make them feel like people, all the way through.

This was even better than the last; I liked getting to know the main characters better. The budding relationship between Kat and her boss is great. But the best part was that I didn't see the solution and yet it made perfect sense.....even though I totally missed the clues!

Ice Blue was a great read. It was easy to read and enjoy as a character novel wrapped around a murder story. The plot mysterey itself was adequate, but the writing and the characterizations were the highlight. It was a refreshing novel in which the characters (at least the protagonists) weren't generic stereotypes. As an American, it was very fascinating to get this insight into English class tensions. The story led through these complex structures in a way that felt truly educational without being pedantic or condescending. I look forward to reading more from Emma Jameson.

The author writes masterfully. There is no extraneous 'fluff' or unnecessary dialogue. I enjoyed the story so much, I slowed down my normal reading pace! Loosely quoting another reviewer - I really wanted to know who the culprit was, but I also really didn't want the story to end!! I rarely feel this way about an author's writing. Well done - looking forward to reading other books in series.ll

I actually care about these characters. Great writing.

My criteria for a good mystery is that I can't figure out who the 'bad guy' is until late in the story. This book met my criteria. Plus it was hard to put it down - I just had to keep reading to find out 'who did it'! I'm on #2 in the series, and again, have no clue who and how the 'deed' was done!

I really enjoyed this book. Loved the characters and plot and can't wait for Blue Murder and the developing romance between the 2 main characters. If the author continues to write this series, I will continue to read each and every one. Ice Blue is a very well written murder, mystery, romance. I am finally able to enjoy reading about older more mature and believable characters.

The style of this book reminded me of P.D. James. Can't wait for more mysteries from the author.

From the first, this novel captured my attention. The characters were very real - well-written and fully fleshed out. Their actions and dialogue were very realistic with their character as we watch them interact. DS Kate Wakefield does not suffer a fool of a boss quietly. She has no problem having very loud and very public rows with the "if there is a wrong answer, I will find it" Superintendent Jackson. When Lord Hetheridge arrives at the station at the end the one of the public rows, he is immediately struck by Kate. When Jackson fires her, Hetheridge steps in and asks to have her transferred to his team. The mystery that follows is a nice cozy. The really outstanding part of this book is the incredible character development. The author does not rely on the usual first-time author mistake of telling us about the characters. Emma shows us the characters and their interaction to let the reader get to know and either love or hate them. Minor plot boo-boos can be overlooked if the action is consistent with characters - some characters seem to lead the plot rather than the other way around. Personally, I prefer character driven novels or mysteries. As long as the characters remain true to themselves, the plot will follow logically. I recommend this novel and can hardly wait for the next installment to be published!

Very good. Imagine an Elizabeth George novel cut by 90% and with some humor added. Bought all books after first trying this one when it was discounted.

I liked this one. It's a good mix of police procedural and English cozy mystery, with an intriguing romance, but with a quirky, contemporary twist. Looking forward to the next one.

Full disclosure: Emma Jameson's my friend. Having said that, I would've like ICE BLUE no matter who wrote it. Anthony Hetheridge (who I always imagine as Anthony Hopkins, LOL!) is an English baron and inspector for Scotland Yard who thinks the second half of his life is already mapped out. Then he works a case with Kate Wakefield, a former East Ender who's clawed her way up from neglect and grinding poverty. They have nothing in common -- nothing except devotion to the Yard and a growing passion for each other. One of those cozies where the plot may not change your life, but the characters and the dialogue keep it going!

Some mystery authors count on gore and shock value to sell their books, but Emma has the ability to present a good "who-done-it" without sending you to the loo to give up your lunch! Her characters are people you want to know and are sorry to leave when you come to the last page. I'll be watching for more!
