Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
In rural North Carolina, a boy's disappearance leads people to worry that he has fallen victim to a serial killer. Hired to investigate, psychic detective Harper Connelly finds much more than she bargained for. The discovery of eight teenage victims in icy graves so thoroughly disturbs Harper that she wants to leave the area as quickly as possible. But unexpected circumstances prevent any early exit and increase her visibility as a target.
Library Journal

In the third installment (after Grave Surprise) of her supernatural series featuring psychic Harper Connelly and her partner and stepbrother, Tolliver Lang, Harper is hired to find the bodies of six teenage boys who went missing over a two-year period. She discovers them buried in the frozen ground just outside of Doreville, NC, a good place to live until the community realizes that one of its own is a serial killer. Harris's greatest strength is creating realistic, fully rounded characters with just a sentence or two; her depiction of gruesome crimes is such that this work is not for the faint of heart. But fans of paranormal mysteries, especially of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books, will snap this book up. Harris also writes the Sookie Stackhouse vampire series and lives in Arkansas. Meet the Author

Charlaine Harris has produced two other series in addition to her Sookie Stackhouse books.

Biography

A native of the Mississippi Delta, Charlaine Harris grew up in a family of avid readers (her father was a teacher; her mother a librarian). She attended Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, graduating in 1973 with a degree in English and Communication Arts. Although she penned poetry and plays in school, her first serious foray into fiction was with two standalone novels, Sweet and Deadly and A Secret Rage, published (effortlessly!) in the early 1980s.

After her early success, Harris released the first installment in a series of lighthearted mysteries starring spunky, small-town Georgia librarian, true crime enthusiast, and amateur sleuth Aurora Teagarden. When Aurora debuted in Real Murders (1990), Publishers Weekly welcomed "a heroine as capable and potentially complex as P. D. James's Cordelia Gray." The book went on to receive an Agatha Award nomination.

Anxious for another challenge, Harris began a second series in 1996. Darker and edgier than the Teagarden novels, these mysteries featured taciturn, 30-something housecleaner Lily Bard, a woman with a complicated past who has moved to the small town of Shakespeare, Arkansas, to find peace and solitude. The first novel, Shakespeare's Landlord, was well-received. BookList raved: "Harris has created an intriguing new character in this solidly plotted story." [Much to the disappointment of her fans, Harris concluded the Lilly Bard sequence in 2001 with Shakespeare's Counselor.]

Although Harris achieved moderate success with these two series (which she laughingly describes as "cozies with teeth"), she would hit the jackpot in 2001 with Dead Until Dark, a sly, spoofy paranormal mystery starring a telepathic Louisiana cocktail waitress named Sookie Stackhouse, who falls in love with a vampire named Bill. The novel, a delightful hybrid of mystery, science fiction, and romance, was an instant hit with critics. ("Harris' Sookie has the potential to attract more readers than Hamilton's Anita Blake," raved the dark fantasy magazine Cemetery Dance.) Readers, too, adored the Southern Vampire Series and have rewarded the author with bestseller after bestseller. (In 2008, the Sookie saga came to HBO in a top-rated television adaptation, True Blood, starring Anna Paquin.)

With 2006's Grave Sight, Harris added yet another fascinating character to her stable -- a young woman named Harper Connelly whose youthful encounter with a lightning bolt has left her with the ability to find corpses and determine how they died. In addition to juggling characters and plots for her popular series, Harris has also contributed short stories and novellas to several anthologies of paranormal fantasy fiction.

Good To Know

In our interview, Harris confesses:

"I'm really a boring person. My family (my husband and three children) is the most important thing in my life. I go to bed early, I get up early. I love to go to the movies with my husband. My favorite things about finally making some money as a writer are (a) I can buy as many books as I want, and (b) I can hire a maid. The first job I had was working in an offset darkroom at a very small newspaper. I stood on a concrete floor all day and made minimum wage -- which then was $1.60 an hour. I hated it, and I learned a lot, though not necessarily about working in a darkroom. So being a writer is much better."

    fin psychic mystery

The residents of Doraville, North Carolina fear the worst as the number of runaway boys seems improbable. The townsfolk believe a serial killer is living amidst them murdering their male offspring. Against the opinion of Sheriff Sandra Rockwell, psychic detective Harper Connelly and her manager stepbrother Tolliver Lang come to the town to find the missing boys. To the horror of both women and Tolliver, Harper earns her fee when she uncovers eight corpses. Not long afterward, someone assaults an already weary Harper. Worn out to her bone marrow and fearful of further attacks, Harper wants to go home to heal from her injuries not all being physical. However, a less skeptical Sandra pleads with her and the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation demands she continue to work on the case. The media, learning of the deadly find and psychic link, turns the inquiry into a circus while Harper¿s psychic friends try to assist her as they begin to find more horrific remains. The third grave Connelly psychic mystery (see GRAVE SIGHT and GRAVE SURPRISE) is a tense thriller that grips the audience from the moment the heroine finds the grisly remains of eight bodies and never slows down until the final confrontation. The cast enhances the tale either by bringing local flavor to the plot or assistance/deterrence to Harper. Although there is a binge of serial killers in literature of late, the fast-paced story line deftly uses the paranormal to make it seem normal as the heroine confronts an abnormal psychopathic killer in an entertaining regional whodunit. --- Harriet Klausner

An Ice Cold Grave is the third book in the Harper Connelly serie

An Ice Cold Grave is the third book in the Harper Connelly series by American author, Charlaine Harris. Harper’s latest assignment is a law enforcement invitation by Sandra Rockwell, sheriff of Doraville, in Knott County, South Carolina in the middle of winter. The Sheriff is grasping at straws trying to find six boys gone missing over the last five years. Harper finds them all, and two more: a serial killer’s icy graveyard. But before she and Tolliver can depart the town, someone attacks her, landing her in hospital. Psychic Xylda Bernardo and her grandson Manfred (see Grave Surprise) turn up to help, but land in their own hot water. Eventually a serial killer is arrested (but not before another boy dies) so the townspeople can rest easy. Or can they? This instalment features murder ,  suicide, a lake cottage, power cuts, an ice storm, an underground chamber, quick-thinking neighbours, quite a lot of hospital visits, several suspects, a red herring or two and an exciting climax. Guns, knives and shovels are used as weapons. Harris has created a series with likeable characters and an original plot. The relationship between Harper and Tolliver takes a turn and readers will look forward to the final book in the series, Grave Secret.

    Surprisingly very good

The Harper Connelly series is surprisingly very good, although I am a little surprised by her relationship with her brother. Despite the initial shock, I think it's a good fit.

    This series is getting better

I wondered with the first of this series if it was worth reading any others. I bought the next few books and each book gets better. It was weird but great that the Harper end up with her step brother.

Very graphic but a great book.

I know death isnt always neat and pretty, especially when reading a book about a girl who finds dead bodies; the graphic deaths just caught me off guard. Other than that i would have given 5 stars. Though im not sure i like where relationships ended up. I would have liked to have read more about xylda, i love her character. As with any series, I def think that this book is far more enjoyable if you have read the first two in the series prior. I def will reccomend this series to friends.

    Good book.

I have read three of four of the Harper Conelly series. The first book made me want to keep reading these series. Book two was ok and book three was better. I don't really care for Charlaine Harris's writting she keeps repeating herself and i'm the type of person to get on with it already! I have one more book to this series and i hope it's a goid one.

Was looking for more Charlaine Harris...

I read all of the Sookie Stackhouse novles and I wanted to experience more of Charlaine Harris' writing. I read this entire series and I thought that the first book was a little hard to get inot however, the twists and turns were a pleasant surprise. I would definitley recomend this book to my fellow Sookie Stackhouse fans, this series is just as interesting and well written.

    interesting change

I'm almost done with this book right now. I have read the first 2 and enjoyed them- dark, but not too dark, creepy, but not too creepy, fluffy, but not too fluffy- a decent combination for some more complex "chick lit" style stuff. I hate that phrase, but you get my point.

There's been some changes in the character relations in this 3rd installment. Again- I'm not entirely done, so there's room yet for my opinion to fully form- but I remain hesitant about some of it. It's either a really good move to keep things going with the series, OR a horrible disaster that will burn out my interest fast. It remains to be seen. depending on how this one ends, I will most likely give one more book a try before I decide that one.

All in all, these are well written, and you can't always guess the who dun it until right before the characters do- which I appreciate cause I usually figure it out too early. If you occasionally like a light beach read type book, but find them to get repetitive and silly- you might want to give these a try. It's a nice change without getting too terribly heavy.

    Such a tightly woven plot!

I picked up this series while waiting for the next Sookie Stackhouse novel and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it! The first Harper Connelly book was ok... but just like the Sookie Stackhouse novels, as you move forward in the series it gets better and better. More plot twists and surprises, I just can't put into words how great this book was. Probably my favorite of the existing four.

    Wow...

An Ice Cold Grave was one of the greatest books I have read in a long time. Grave Sight (the first in the series) was just a little bit slow, and Grave Surprise (the second) picked up a lot, but An Ice Cold Grave was the icing on the cake. By far my favorite. You want to fight for Harper, you fall in love with her as well as Tolliver! Very original plot line. I would definitely recommend.
