Overview

She's wanted for crimes against the throne. He's the empire’s most notorious assassin. With bounties on their heads, they’re not likely candidates for heroics, but they're on a quest for redemption. Unfortunately, they'll have to pursue and conquer great threats to earn the emperor's recognition.

Three short fantasy stories set in the author's "Emperor's Edge" universe.

Ice Cracker II -- When wanted criminals Sicarius and Amaranthe unearth a plot against the military’s premier ice breaking ship, they may be the only ones who can thwart the saboteurs...if the soldiers don't kill them first.

Through Fire Distilled -- An assignment to investigate a "haunted" distillery turns sour when mercenaries try to collect on Amaranthe's bounty.

The Frozen Water Trade -- A mission to help an old friend results in a night trapped in a cabin with blizzards and underworld predators on the outside and vengeful relatives on the inside. Alas, it's bad form to kill the client's father.

I didn't expect much from this download, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was really, really good. Excellent writing. You become involved with the characters immediately. It takes place in a quirky sword, sorcery, techie world and is very fast paced. I didn't bother to read the bonus excerpt because I had already decided to buy the rest of the series.

Few authors can make you care about the characters in 40 pages let alone tell a complete story. This author does both and has made me a fan. I will be buying stories from this author. I whole heartedly recommend this story.

I truly enjoyed reading this, and my only wish is that it was longer - but hey, you can only get so much for free. I will definitely be going out to purchase the full-length story that was mentioned at the end.

What a fun short story this was to read! I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the spots of humor the author threw in when you least expected it. Highly recommended, if you love adventure and action you will adore this book! Your Faithful Reviewer, DayDreamingBookGirl ;)

I was instantly charmed by writing of style and grace, a world of promised depth and complexity, and an engaging and delightful protagonist. This story is handled with a great deal of skill and the calm confidence of a writer born. I very much look forward to having the following prediction proven by events; Lindsay Buroker will be a No.1 bestselling author. Chris Northern: responsible for The Last King's Amulet & The Key To The Grave

This short is best read after you read Emperor's Edge. Even though this one scene is short, it gives you a glimpse at the building relationship of trust between Amaranthe and Sicarius that started in Emperor's Edge. This author still gives you great steam punk action within only 43 pages. Love this author!

I did not think that a free short story was gonna be this good but it turned out great! I instantly loved the characters and as I was reading the story I was hoping there was gonna be a series of novels about these characters and it turns out there is and im stoked. I liked this book alot its an easy read an di hope you will as well.

Absolutely wonderful short inclusions that I enjoyed immensely, as they were further moments with characters that I really love. They're better read *after* you get your feet into the story through the Emperor's Edge novel, but seeing as that's a free ebook, I don't see how this is a problem.

Amaranthe is so bubbly and naive yet so...not... Sicarius along for the ride with his weirdness, magic, monsters and political insanities, this is just such a fun series! This little collection was a nice bit of reading while munching some dessert. Books is just funny while trying to be serious, and the antics of all with the whole NO WAY narrow escapes keeps me happily reading
