Children's LiteratureThere are some interesting pop ups in this little book, and there is a strong tie-in to matchbox cars with which children may be familiar. In fact, this is a Matchbox Hero City tale. Driving too fast a little red car slides down a mountain side, onto a frozen pond, through the ice and into the freezing water. Rescue vehicles are on the way! A diver jumps in and grabs a hook tossed to him and hooks it onto the car. A crane raises the car and a doctor is on the scene to declare the driver safe. There is a small problem visually with the hook pulling out the car attached to ropes, which have not been mentioned, but a more serious problem is that, in the pictures it is very clear that there is a person in the car and in the underwater scene the person is still visible in the driver's seat under the water. How long did it take to get the crane truck on the scene? How long did it take to wrap the ropes around the car? The problem may not be satisfactorily solved in the mind of a small child even upon seeing the last spread where a doctor seems to be checking the victim's chest. This reviewer was worried. How was he able to live under the water inside the car all that time? Could anyone live under the water that long? 2003, Little Simon, Ages 2 to 5.
