So Robert Chiltern is a stuffy 40 year old parliamentarian who is blackmailed by Lady Cheveley to support her illegal scheme. She knows the dishonorable origins of his wealth and threatens to expose him unless he supports her scheme. Robert sees no way out and agrees. Lady Chiltern, his high brow wife is absolutely appalled when her husband tells her he is supporting the scheme. She stresses how she knows him to be an honorable man who would never approve of such a dishonorable scheme and he reneges on his deal with Ms. Cheveley. Enter Lord Goring to the rescue. This wastrel dandy comes in and saves the day.  Super witty, super delightful - and such a nice change of pace from Dostoyevsky. This book was lovely because nothing was what it should be and everything was what it shouldn't. The word play was smart and edifying. The only downside was character development. There wasn't much by way of character development. They were shallow, one-dimensional caricatures of ideals and had no history to speak of. We never found out Ms. Cheveley's motivations and such. Still, entirely worth the read.

Not a book but a badly written play.

I enjoy Oscar Wilde, but the editing of this e-book was horrible. I expected more. Since this is play not a story the description is misleading. As for the story, it has more details in it than the movie.
