If Grandma Had Wheels: Jewish Folk Sayings

If Grandma Had Wheels: Jewish Folk Sayings

by Ruby G. Strauss (Editor), Richard Rosenberg (Illustrator)

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up Fifty Jewish folk sayings (in English) fill the pages of this slim volume. Many of these adages, collected by Strauss during her Hebrew studies at New York University, represent the wit and wisdom of Eastern European shtetl (small town) Jews whose way of life was extinguished by Cossacks and Nazis. The sayings, two per page, are hand printed under or around cartoon-like pen-and-ink drawings of Eastern European and Hassidic-like characters. Although the format is appealing, the book will provide more enjoyment for grandparents and great-grandparents who grew up using such witticisms in Yiddish-speaking households than for children.
